Lazer Z1 MIPS Helmet Info

Lazer’s Z1 Helmet is the essence of Pro. It is sleek, light, and seemingly more vents than helmet. The Z1 is the default lid of the Lotto and Rally professional cycling teams. The Z1 is available in both Standard and Mips versions.

Lazer has been refining this silhouette for years. They wanted something elemental, skeletal, superlight, and strong. This lid has 31 vents for air to enter the helmet, move around your noggin, and rush out the back. Of course, it has to pass safety tests around the world, so they employ In-Mold construction held together by their Rigidity Brace System, and clad it in a microshell. The helmet passes tests for CE, CPSC, and AS, so no matter where you are, you’ve got a helmet that meets or exceeds the stiffest standards found.

Holding it on our head is Lazer’s ARS. This is Advanced Rollsys System. It’s a retention means that utilizes a cable that wraps around your head and is adjusted by a dial built into the top  of the helmet. By covering such a great surface area, the adjustment can hold firm, even when it just feels like a barely-there squeeze.

Lazer has tricked out the Z1 with several features unique to Lazer. Lazer produces a magnet-secured set of sunglasses called Magneto which utilize magnets installed on the helmet straps and glasses to stay in place, keeping the glasses off your ears and helmet: The Z1 accepts these magnets. You can install their LifeBEAM heart rate monitor transmitter so you don’t need to wear a strap while training. They have an LED taillight that can be installed in the helmet, too. Finally, they have a helmet cover called the Aeroshell, which can both protect you from the elements and make the helmet more aerodynamic. You can accessorize the Z1 with Lazer’s Cappucinolock as well; this thingee is a lock that attaches to your helmet straps so you can use it as a short-term lock to secure your bike while you get a snack.

As mentioned at the top there are two versions, Standard and Mips. The latter is similar to the former, but a torque-reducing technology has been added to the interior of the helmet. The basic idea of Mips, Multi-directional Impact Protection System, is that the helmet can move around, just a little, when secured to your head, so when your casque-covered noggin collides with some heavy object, like the ground, your head can rotate a little to reduce rotational forces on your head and reduce overall impact. It achieves this by lining the foam with a “sliding enabler” material and then creating an internal structure called the “Mips Low Friction Liner” which goes around the retention and allows the helmet to move a bit while being secured to your head, in an effort to reduce rotational impact forces when the helmet hits the ground.

All this in a helmet that can weigh as little as 190g. The Z1 from Lazer is a hardman’s helmet that features comfort climbers can appreciate.
