Lake MX242 Shoes - Wide Info
The Lake MX242 Shoes in Wide represent Lake's most sophisticated approach to solving the fit problem that plagues serious mountain bike riders with wider or harder-to-fit feet. Built on the MX Competition Last — a geometry with a larger toe box and tighter heel designed specifically for performance riding and racing — the MX242 Wide adds meaningful additional width without compromising the structural support or power transfer that a carbon-soled MTB shoe demands. At $429.99, this is a performance shoe engineered around the idea that the best-fitting shoe is always the fastest shoe.
The upper is the defining feature of the MX242 design. Lake segments it into six independent zones, each of which can be adjusted separately to relieve pressure from specific areas — bunions, a high instep, or an unusually wide forefoot — without affecting the rest of the fit. The shell combines Helcor abrasion-resistant leather, which is engineered specifically to hold up against the scraping and scuffing that comes with trail riding, with Ecco full-grain leather panels and a Nufoam lining. Carbon fiber support panels are integrated throughout to maintain foot stability without restricting the upper's ability to conform around individual foot shapes. The heat-moldable heel counter can be custom-fitted at home using Lake's molding process, effectively locking your heel in place and eliminating the rearward movement that saps power on steep climbs.

Design Benefits
- Six-zone upper for genuinely custom fit. Most cycling shoes offer one or two points of adjustment. The MX242 divides the upper into six independent panels, so you can fine-tune tension around a bunion or high instep without overtightening the rest of the shoe. It's a construction method that makes a meaningful difference for riders who've never found a standard last that works.
- Heat-moldable heel counter. The moldable heel cup conforms to your specific heel shape, which doubles the contact surface between your foot and the shoe and eliminates the micro-movement that causes hot spots on long rides. Combined with the BOA Li2 dials for precision closure, the hold is firm without being constrictive.
- 100% carbon fiber outsole with MTB rubber protection. The full carbon base delivers stiff, direct power transfer — every pedal stroke goes where it should. The real rubber Mountain Competition overlay adds grip and protection in the cleat area and along the outsole edges, where trail debris and hike-a-bike sections would otherwise wear through a road-spec sole.
- BOA Li2 dials. Lake specs the Li2, BOA's most advanced cycling dial — bidirectional micro-adjustment with one-handed operation and a design built to resist abrasion from trail use. Two dials give you independent control over forefoot and instep tension, which pairs directly with the six-zone upper for a fully dialed fit.
