ENVE G SES 4.5 Wheelset Info

Gravel riding has changed faster than most cycling disciplines. What began as a niche off-pavement pursuit now produces race speeds that rival road events — and as those speeds climbed, the equipment calculus changed with them. Wider tires, once considered the enemy of aerodynamics, turned out to be an opportunity: a wide tire on a narrow rim creates turbulent airflow at the sidewall; a wide tire on a matching wide rim maintains clean flow and reduces drag. ENVE built the G SES line around that insight. The ENVE G SES 4.5 Wheelset is the lighter, more versatile member of that family — an aero gravel wheelset designed for the full range of modern gravel terrain, from race-pace flats to mixed climbing, without requiring a compromise between aerodynamic performance and handling feel.

The rim depths are asymmetric: 49mm front, 55mm rear. Gravel's rougher, unpredictable surfaces put a premium on front wheel stability — crosswinds that are manageable on a road bike feel different when the surface beneath you is loose or uneven, and a deep-section front amplifies that effect. The shallower 49mm front keeps steering light and predictable in variable conditions; the deeper 55mm rear captures aerodynamic benefit where depth has the least impact on handling. Both rims share a 30mm internal width, tuned to work with 44mm to 52mm tires. That pairing is deliberate: as internal width increases, a mounted tire sits rounder and matches the rim's outer profile more cleanly, eliminating the airflow mismatch that occurs when a wide tire overhangs a narrower rim edge. The hookless bead draws from ENVE's M Series mountain bike technology, using a wider blunted bead edge to distribute impact energy across more material — meaningful toughness for the rocks and ruts that fast gravel courses hide. These are tubeless-only rims; the hookless bead is not compatible with inner tubes.

The hubs are ENVE's Innerdrive Premium system, designed and manufactured entirely in-house. The drive mechanism is a 42mm ratchet system with oversized proprietary steel ratchets positioned inboard of the bearings. That placement reduces axle flex under pedaling loads, lowering stress on the bearings and extending service intervals. Automatic preload adjustment compensates for bearing wear over time without manual re-tensioning — for gravel use, where service access is irregular and conditions are harder on components than road riding, that maintenance simplicity matters. The hubset weighs 326 grams in total: 109g front, 217g rear.

Spokes are Sapim CX-Ray, straight-pull and bladed, laced to internal Alpina Nylock brass nipples at 120kgf tension. The CX-Ray's flat cross-section reduces aerodynamic drag and adds lateral stiffness compared to a round spoke of equivalent weight — a measurable difference on a wheel this deep under sustained power. Internal nipples protect the nipple seat from trail contamination and simplify tubeless setup. Rim weights are 455g front, 450g rear; the complete wheelset with tape and valves on an HG freehub is 1565g ±3%. The rims are made at ENVE's Ogden, Utah facility, where design, testing, and manufacturing share the same building — a production integration that supports ENVE's warranty and quality standards.

At 1565g with meaningful aero depth at both ends, the G SES 4.5 occupies a specific and useful position in the gravel wheel market. On long fast stretches of hardpack or gravel, the 55mm rear section contributes aerodynamic efficiency without requiring you to fight the front wheel in crosswinds. On climbs, the wheelset weight stays competitive. On rough descents, the 49mm front tracks without the anxiety a deeper rim introduces. It's the wheelset for courses that mix terrain over distance — events where picking a single priority means leaving performance on the table somewhere on the route.

Four freehub options are available at RA Cycles: HG11 for Shimano and SRAM 11-speed, XDR for SRAM 12-speed, Campagnolo N3W, and Microspline for Shimano 12-speed. Available in White; centerlock lockrings are not included. Ships within 5–8 business days. At $2,800, the G SES 4.5 sits at the top tier of the gravel wheelset market — for buyers who want the manufacturing quality, warranty support, and component integration that come from an in-house production model, the argument is straightforward.

The RA Perspective

The G SES 4.5 tends to come up in conversations with riders who've already done the mental work on wheel depth. They usually arrive at the 4.5 vs. 6.7 question quickly — more climbing and handling flexibility versus maximum aero — and the 4.5 wins whenever the course has real vertical or when conditions are unpredictable.

What stands out on the spec sheet is the asymmetric depth: 49mm front, 55mm rear. That combination makes a lot of sense for gravel specifically. A 55mm front on a rough descent in a crosswind is not what most riders want. A 49mm front is manageable. The 55mm rear gets you most of the aerodynamic benefit without the front-end anxiety. ENVE made the right call there.

The tubeless-only requirement is firm, not a preference. If a customer is planning to run inner tubes, this isn't the wheel. The hookless bead is incompatible with tubes, and that's not a work-around situation — it's a tire retention issue under hard braking or cornering. We make sure to explain that clearly before a customer pulls the trigger.

One practical note: lockrings are not included. Centerlock lockrings aren't universal, and some customers will need to add them. Worth flagging at purchase so the wheel isn't sitting on a bench waiting for hardware.

At $2,800 for the set, the G SES 4.5 competes directly with the best gravel wheels at similar prices. ENVE's advantage is the full in-house stack — rims, hubs, spoke selection, warranty, all under one roof. For mixed-terrain events at distance, where you need a wheel that handles the flat sections quickly and the climbs without protest, this is where we'd start the conversation.
