The derailleur is the most mechanically complex part of a modern drivetrain — and the one where the difference between tiers is most immediately felt. A flagship electronic rear derailleur shifts with a precision and consistency that a mechanical mid-range unit simply can't match, and the gap between wired Di2 and wireless AXS or WRL has largely closed. For most riders, the key decision is platform: Shimano Di2, SRAM AXS, or Campagnolo WRL — and that choice typically cascades through the rest of the drivetrain. The other category worth knowing about is oversized pulley wheel systems: aftermarket rear derailleur cage replacements, most notably from CeramicSpeed, that reduce drivetrain friction through larger-diameter, lower-contact-force pulley wheels.
