Bell Sidetrack II Mips Child Helmet Info

The Bell Sidetrack II MIPS Child Helmet is Bell's all-mountain trail helmet for young riders — built with more all-around coverage than a standard road helmet and a full set of features designed to keep the fit dialed through the chaos of a real ride. At 360 grams in the Youth size, it's light enough that kids forget they're wearing it, which is exactly the point.

MIPS Evolve is the protection system here. Rather than adding a separate floating liner, Bell integrates the MIPS slip plane directly into the retention system. This reduces rotational forces in angled impacts — the kind kids are more likely to take on a trail — while trimming weight and improving ventilation compared to earlier MIPS implementations. The result fits closer to the head without extra bulk.

The Ergo Fit dial at the rear adjusts with one hand and works in concert with the MIPS retention — fit and protection in a single system. No-Twist Tri-Glide fasteners keep the strap Y-junction flat against the cheek and prevent twisting. Sweat Guide padding at the brow wicks moisture away from the forehead and away from eyewear. A removable visor handles sun and trail debris. Three universal sizes cover toddler through youth (45–57cm), and four colorways — HiViz/Red, Light Blue/Pink, Matte Black, and White Star — give younger riders something to be excited about wearing.

Design Benefits

  1. MIPS Evolve — less bulk, same protection. Integrating the slip plane into the retention system means no separate floating liner. Lighter, better ventilated, and closer-fitting than older MIPS designs — while still reducing rotational forces on angled impacts.
  2. One-hand fit adjustment. The Ergo Fit dial lets a parent or rider dial in the fit quickly, even with gloves on. Integrated with MIPS so there's no fighting between two independent systems.
  3. Strap management that holds. No-Twist Tri-Glides keep the straps flat and the Y-junction positioned correctly against the cheek — the detail that separates a helmet that stays properly adjusted from one that doesn't.
  4. Trail-specific coverage. Extended rear coverage wraps further down the back of the head than a road helmet, designed for the falls kids take on dirt and gravel rather than pavement.

The RA Perspective

We fit a lot of kids' helmets at RA Cycles, and the conversation usually goes one of two ways: parents who want the safest option available, and kids who want the coolest-looking one. The Sidetrack II handles both better than most helmets in this price range.

The MIPS Evolve implementation is the detail we point to first. Older MIPS designs added a separate floating liner, which made helmets slightly bulkier and sometimes uncomfortable for kids who notice every little thing. Evolve integrates the slip plane into the retention system itself — same rotational force reduction, less material, closer fit to the head. For trail riding where angled impacts are more common than straight-on ones, that matters.

The Ergo Fit dial is genuinely easy to use. Kids can adjust it themselves, parents can dial it in at the trailhead in seconds, and it holds position through a full ride. We see a lot of kids' helmets where the fit system loosens mid-ride because the dial is too easy to knock. The rubber overmolding on this one gives it enough resistance to stay put.

The extended rear coverage is worth noting for parents buying this for trail use. Standard road helmets don't wrap as far down the back of the head — this one does, which is appropriate for the kind of riding kids actually do.

Three sizes cover toddler through youth with universal sizing, so you have a real range of adjustment within each. The HiViz/Red colorway is popular with parents for obvious visibility reasons; the White Star tends to be the one kids pick themselves.
