The Campagnolo Zonda Clincher Wheelset is one of Campagnolo's best-selling aluminum wheels, and it earns that reputation by borrowing heavily from the brand's higher-end Shamal rim. The milled aluminum rim shares nearly identical dimensions with the Shamal — 22mm external width, with a 24mm depth up front and 27mm in the rear — so riders get a rim profile derived from Campagnolo's racing wheels without paying for a carbon rim they may not need for everyday road riding.

Campagnolo's MOMAG rim drilling is the detail that separates the Zonda from a generic alloy clincher. The spoke holes are drilled only on the hub side of the rim, leaving the tire bed unpierced, which increases structural resistance at the rim and means the wheel doesn't need rim tape. At the spoke nipples, the rim deepens slightly to 27mm front and 30mm rear, adding support exactly where the wheel needs it most without adding dead weight elsewhere in the rim.

Spoke count and lacing pattern differ front to rear, which is typical of a wheel built around real-world load rather than symmetry for its own sake. The front wheel uses 16 spokes in a radial lace for a stiff, direct steering feel, while the rear runs 21 spokes in Campagnolo's Mega-G3 pattern with a 2:1 spoke ratio favoring the drive side. That asymmetric build balances spoke tension between the drive and non-drive sides of the rear wheel, which reduces the stress that typically fatigues rear wheels and helps the wheel hold true longer under hard pedaling efforts. Both wheels use butted, variable-section stainless steel spokes with an aerodynamic profile, and every wheel leaves the factory dynamically balanced.

The hubs continue that same practical engineering. Aluminum hub bodies and flanges keep weight down, and Campagnolo sticks with cup-and-cone bearings using loose steel balls rather than sealed cartridge bearings — a choice that lets a mechanic adjust bearing preload with the low-drag races rather than replacing a sealed unit when it wears. The rear hub's drive-side flange is oversized with deep slots that anchor the straight-pull spokes securely, which matters given the higher spoke tension the 2:1 lacing pattern puts on that side of the wheel. Self-locking nipples help the wheel maintain proper spoke tension over time, so the truing you do after the first few hard rides tends to hold.

Freehub bodies come in Campagnolo's own splined pattern or a SRAM/Shimano-compatible option, so the wheelset isn't locked to a single drivetrain. Total weight comes in at 1,540 grams — 678g up front, 862g in the rear — which is competitive for an alloy clincher and light enough to notice on a climb without asking the rider to worry about durability. These are rim-brake wheels, built for riders running caliper brakes rather than disc.

The Zonda is built for road racers who want a wheel that can take a full season of hard training and racing without babying it, but it works just as well as an upgrade for a rider on stock wheels who wants a noticeably stiffer, better-built wheelset for club rides and weekend racing.
