Tacx Nera Smart Trainer

Tacx Nera Smart Trainer is a direct-drive indoor trainer from Garmin Tacx that builds side-to-side, forward and backward motion into the unit itself, so the bike moves a little under you the way it does on the road. It sits in the Tacx lineup as a powerful, connected trainer for riders who want a realistic ride feel and accurate data without stepping up to the most expensive models. This version comes with a pre-installed Shimano/SRAM 11-speed cassette and cassette body.

Ride Feel and Power

The integrated motion is the headline feature. Garmin says it makes indoor sessions more comfortable and immersive, which matters on long rides when a rigid trainer can leave your hands and hips sore. Under the motion, the Nera is built for hard efforts. It simulates grades up to 20%, supports sprints up to 2,200 watts, and has a 6.13 kg flywheel with a stated mass inertia of 35.9 kg. Power and cadence accuracy is listed at within 1%, and the trainer needs no calibration.

Built-in Wi-Fi keeps the connection stable with compatible training programs, and a race mode is designed to deliver fast response during virtual races. The Nera also connects over ANT+ and Bluetooth, so it works with smartphones, tablets, ANT+ bike computers and compatible smartwatches. Garmin lists support for the Tacx Training app and Zwift.

Setup and Compatibility

The included 11-speed cassette fits Shimano and SRAM 9 to 11-speed drivetrains. Campagnolo and SRAM 12-speed XDR bikes need a different cassette body, and Garmin also lists support for Shimano 12-speed Hyperglide+. The trainer takes quick-release axles at 130 or 135 mm and thru-axle end caps at 142 or 148 mm, with an adapter set sold separately for non-standard sizes.

The Nera weighs 24.7 kg (54.45 lbs) and has a built-in handle and folding legs. Folded, it measures 629 by 408 mm. It runs on 100 to 240 VAC power, so you will need an outlet nearby. Room to Grow

The Nera works with the Tacx Alpine gradient simulator, which raises the simulated range to 25% climbs and minus 10% descents and adds virtual steering in compatible apps.
