Silca 17-4 Stainless Presta Head

The Silca 17-4 Stainless Presta Head is a presta-only pump chuck machined from 17-4 precipitation hardening stainless steel — a material used in aerospace structures and military aircraft that is more than six times stronger and four times harder than the brass it replaces. Where brass is built to last a lifetime, 17-4 is built to outlast several.

The knurl geometry is the result of testing more than 20 different styles and depths to achieve a grip that feels deliberate and secure in your hand. The included 242 gasket uses a fully synthetic red elastomer — not the standard carbon-black natural rubber — with a two-stage seal geometry that engages both the valve stem and the base of the valve core threads. That dual-point contact creates a more positive lock-up and, according to Silca, a seal life more than five times longer than conventional Buna-N materials. The gasket clicks onto the valve stem with a satisfying positive engagement, and line pressure actively compresses the gasket against the valve as you pump, reinforcing the seal rather than working against it.
