Quarq DZero BB30 Aluminum Crank Info
When you’re looking for a cost-effective and super-durable choice for a crank-based power meter Quarq offers up this version, the DZero Aluminum Crankset. This model shares a spider with the Red and Carbon Crankarm versions, just replaces the arms with forged aluminum crankarms. You save a bundle.
The great thing is that the new DZero spider is the bee’s knees. It’s the newest, most advanced spider Quarq has ever created. There’s so much going on here, though what really matters is that it does what it’s supposed to do better and more efficiently. That is, it measures power more consistently than ever before, still has a +/- 1.5% accuracy, has better battery life, despite the fact that it now broadcasting both ANT+ and Bluetooth low energy (BTLE) all the time, and it still offers all the features you’ve come to expect from Quarq. That means you don’t need to affix a magnet to the frame to turn it on, the 2032 coin cell battery is user-replaceable and available just about everywhere, there is power balance to measure right and left strokes, there is 10k temperature compensation to make sure the meter doesn’t lose accuracy as the day warms up and cools down, it has OmniCal to make sure that you don’t need to recalibrate when you change chainrings, and it has a waterproof rating of IPX7.
Quarq found about 150 ways to improve their design, and employed them all in the spider. Another great new feature is the red LED that used to tell you that the meter was on has been replaced by one that is green or red, and it will tell you not only if the battery life is good, bad, or on life support, but also whether or not zeroing has worked or failed, and when the firmware is updating. Yes, you can upgrade the firmware, and do it for free, with the Qalvin app, which you can download onto most phones.
There are essentially four models. All four have crankarm lengths as short as 162.5mm and as long as 177.5mm. There are two basic variations, the 110mm BCD and 130mm BCD spiders. The shorter is for inner rings as small as 34t and outer rings as large as 52t. The taller is for 38t minimum inner and no max on the outer. Then, there are the GXP and BB30 versions. GXP works with GXP bottom brackets as well as BB86, and any bottom bracket that fits a 24mm thru-axle. BB30 works with BB30, PF30, BBright, BB386EVO, BB30A, and PF30A.
The SRAM DZero Aluminum Crank comes as a chassis only. You need to supply the bottom bracket, chaining bolts (steel, please), and the spider. The rings you put on will work with 10- and 11-speed drivetrains. This version opens up your choices as you can use traditional five-bolt chainrings, so long as they have the correct bolt circle diameter, from many companies.
