The Shimano STEPS SC-E8000 Cycling Computer is the dedicated display and control unit for Shimano's STEPS E8000 e-bike drivetrain system. This is not a general-purpose cycling computer — it's the command center for the E8000 motor, putting assist mode control and real-time system data directly on the handlebar. A 1.6-inch color LCD with backlight displays speed, battery level, estimated range, and current assist mode at a glance, while both 31.8mm and 35.0mm clamps are included for clean integration across different bar setups. At 40.2g, it adds almost nothing to the overall build weight.

The SC-E8000 controls four assist modes: BOOST for maximum motor output on punishing climbs, TRAIL for balanced performance across variable terrain, ECO for conserving battery on longer days in the saddle, and OFF when you want to ride unpowered. A dedicated WALK mode provides reduced-speed motor assist for pushing through technical sections. Each mode is color-coded on the display for immediate readability — no misreading your current setting mid-descent. The RA Perspective

The SC-E8000 is worth understanding before recommending it: this is a STEPS-specific display unit, not a cycling computer in the traditional sense. It has no GPS, no route mapping, and it won't replace a Garmin or Wahoo on the bar. What it does is give the rider proper control over and visibility into the E8000 motor — and it does that well.

For E8000-based builds, this is the display to spec. The color LCD is cleaner and more readable than simpler STEPS displays, and the E-Tube Project app integration is genuinely useful. Being able to tune assist output for each mode from a phone — rather than requiring a dealer visit or proprietary software — makes a real difference for riders who want to dial in their setup for different trails or conditions. Someone who rides a mix of long XC days and short enduro sessions will want different ECO and TRAIL thresholds for each, and the app makes that a five-minute job.

The WALK mode is worth mentioning to customers who do technical alpine riding. On steep, loose terrain where you're off the bike anyway, reduced-speed motor assist is more useful than it sounds — particularly when you're tired and the hike-a-bike section is longer than expected.

One thing to be clear about: compatibility is strict. The SC-E8000 works with E8000 and E8080 motors only. It's not compatible with the EP8 system and won't integrate with other brands' motors. If a customer is building or speccing an E8000 e-MTB, this is the right unit. Any other system needs a different display.
