3T Extrema Italia Frameset Info

The 3T Extrema Italia Frameset is built for the demanding end of gravel riding — long adventure races, rough terrain, and courses where traction and resilience matter as much as speed. It sits at the top of 3T's gravel lineup, positioned above the Racemax for riders who need more tire volume, more confidence on unpredictable surfaces, and a platform designed with bikepacking and adventure racing in mind. The frame and fork are manufactured at 3T's Italian factory using Jazz Carbon — the brand's proprietary process combining filament winding with high-strength and high-stiffness carbon fibers and RTM (resin transfer molding) resin injection. Made entirely in Italy.

The aerodynamic design is central to how the Extrema Italia is engineered. 3T's REALFAST approach starts with actual tire measurements — WAM (Width As Measured) and RAM (Radius As Measured) — rather than relying on nominal sizes that frequently understate real dimensions. The frame is designed around 700c tires in the 47–57mm WAM range, and maximum clearance is 57mm WAM. The upper downtube narrows to 60mm just behind the front tire to redirect airflow coming off the wheel. The lower section widens to 75mm to manage airflow around both the bottles and the integrated storage compartment built into the downtube. That storage compartment opens wide, locks with a Fidlock Mini-Hook mechanism, and holds a removable neoprene bag developed with Missgrape to keep contents secure on rough terrain. The headtube uses an elongated aero profile with an aggressive truncation at the rear, creating a narrow front end between the two headset bearings. Double-drop chainstays — both drive and non-drive sides — optimize tire and crank clearance while stiffening the structure behind the bottom bracket. A close-fitting rear chainstay cutout shields the rear wheel for additional aerodynamic benefit.

The fork is the 3T Fango Extrema Integrale — a full carbon design with a compact crown made possible by disc brakes, which removes the structural bulk that mechanical brake bridges required. Three accessory mount rivets per fork leg accept anything cages for extended carry on long rides. Both fork and frame use direct-mount brake caliper positions, integrating the 160mm rotor geometry into the mount rather than requiring an adapter at either end. The cockpit runs on 3T's MORE Integrale stem system, which routes cables internally through the headtube without the oversized bearings that most integrated setups demand. The practical result: stem lengths can be swapped and small height adjustments made without disconnecting or bleeding hydraulic brake hoses — a meaningful advantage over typical integrated cockpit designs. A dedicated K-Edge GPS mount is included with the stem. The 3T Superghiaia Integrale LTD handlebar completes the front end. A 3T Carbon 27.2mm round seatpost at zero offset comes with the frameset, and the round profile matters: the Extrema is compatible with wireless dropper and suspension seatposts, which fits the platform's adventure and bikepacking brief.

The geometry 3T calls 3Touring runs a slightly higher stack and shorter reach than the Racemax Italia, positioning the rider for better control over rough terrain without abandoning a road-inspired efficiency on faster sections. Head tube angles run from 69.1 degrees at size S to 72 degrees at XL, combined with a large fork offset — 61 to 73mm depending on size — to produce stable, confidence-inspiring handling without making the bike feel sluggish. The rear dropout is a UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) design, making the Extrema Italia compatible with both standard electronic rear derailleurs and SRAM Eagle Transmission derailleurs that mount directly to the frame without a separate hanger. The bottom bracket shell is BB386 EVO. Thru axles are 12x100mm front and 12x142mm rear, the latter specific to 3T's UDH dropout. The frame supports 1x and 2x electronic drivetrain configurations via a braze-on front derailleur mount. Integrated fender mounts are built into the frame.

The Extrema Italia frameset comes in four sizes — S through XL — covering riders from 5'2" to 6'5". Five colorways are available: Selva, Abisso, Project X, Reverb, and Ready to Paint, the last being a raw carbon finish that accepts custom paint directly for a fully personalized build. The frameset includes the 3T MORE stem with K-Edge GPS mount, 3T Superghiaia Integrale LTD bar, 3T Prendo Tough bar tape, a 3T carbon side-load bottle cage, and the round carbon seatpost — a complete cockpit and contact point package that gives a custom build a well-considered starting point. Drivetrain, wheels, and saddle are sold separately.

The RA Perspective

The Extrema Italia is a genuinely interesting frameset to talk about because 3T approaches gravel differently than most brands. The REALFAST aerodynamics concept isn't a branding exercise — it comes from real tire measurement data, and you can see the engineering consequences in how the downtube is shaped. The 60mm upper neck, the widening lower section, the integrated storage: these are specific decisions, not styling choices.

What makes the Extrema's position in the lineup meaningful is that 3T is explicit about where it sits. This is not their fastest gravel bike — that's the Racemax. This is their toughest terrain platform, designed for riders running 50mm-plus tires and needing a frame aerodynamically engineered around that actual tire volume. That's a different design brief than most gravel frames, which optimize for the 40-45mm range and then claim compatibility at 50mm as an afterthought.

The UDH dropout is worth flagging to anyone building with SRAM AXS. Eagle Transmission derailleurs mount directly to the frame without a hanger — that simplifies the drivetrain and removes one more thing to break or lose in the field.

The Fidlock closure on the downtube storage is thoughtful. A conventional lid would pop open on rough terrain at speed. The Missgrape neoprene bag inside keeps tools from rattling. It's the kind of detail that suggests real testing, not a feature added for the press release.

The MORE Integrale stem is one of the better integrated routing implementations we've seen. Swapping stem lengths without touching the brake hoses is a real-world advantage that most integrated cockpits don't offer. That matters if you're doing a proper fit after the build.

Best suited for riders going long, going rough, and building a serious adventure or race machine. The Ready to Paint option is a genuine draw for anyone who wants full creative control over the final look.
