The RA Perspective

The 454 NSW is the wheel we point customers toward when they've already decided they want the deepest, most aero option in Zipp's lineup and they're not going to be talked into something shallower. That's a legitimate position — for criteriums, flat road races, and fast group rides on exposed terrain, the 454 NSW makes a strong case on both the aero and stability fronts.

The thing we emphasize is the Sawtooth rim's handling character. Most 55mm-plus rims are fast in a straight line and manageable in light crosswinds, but they'll push back at you when the wind picks up or gusts. The 454 NSW behaves differently — the Hyperfoil geometry and variable depth profile genuinely flatten the handling response in crosswinds compared to a conventional deep section. That's not something you'll notice in calm conditions, but on a stage race stage or a coastal road ride with a side wind, it's meaningful.

Running these at 65–70 psi on 28mm tires, which is what Zipp's hookless tubeless setup allows and recommends, produces a noticeably fast and compliant ride. It's not plush — this is still a stiff, aggressive wheelset — but it doesn't pound you on imperfect pavement the way high-pressure clinchers do.

One practical note: the 23mm internal width is narrower than the 353 NSW's 25mm. If you're running 30mm-plus tires or building a more comfort-oriented road setup, the 353 NSW is actually the better fit. The 454 NSW is optimized for 28mm, and that's who should buy it.
