Leigh Sargent founded Zipp in 1988 in Indianapolis, bringing motorsports wind-tunnel thinking to bicycle wheels before the cycling industry was doing it. The company’s facility in Speedway, Indiana sits steps from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway — the brand’s origins are impossible to miss. The Firecrest rim profile (2010) proved faster and more stable in crosswinds and reshaped how rims are built across the industry. The NSW line (2016) added HyperFoil nodes — sawtooth shapes modeled on humpback whale fins — to further reduce turbulent drag at speed. Fabian Cancellara won Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders in 2010 on Zipp 303s, the first carbon wheel victories in the cobbled classics. Zipp has been part of SRAM since 2007. The RA Cycles Zipp collection covers road, gravel, and track. The NSW series — 858, 454, 353, 404, 303, and 202 — represents Zipp’s most advanced technology, with complete wheelsets from $2,200 to $4,600. The 808 Firecrest and 303 Firecrest deliver Firecrest performance at a lower price point. For gravel, the 303 XPLR and 101 XPLR cover both 700c and 650b in standard and SW (wide) builds. The Super-9 disc is Zipp’s track wheel. Individual front and rear wheels are available across most models for riders replacing a single wheel or building a custom pairing.
