The RA Perspective

The Kato is one of those pieces of kit that generates real conversation at the shop. The design is unmistakable — Cavendish wore these for his record-tying 2021 Tour stage wins, and the connection stuck. But beyond the history, these are genuinely among the best-performing sunglasses we carry for road riding.

The field of vision is the first thing you notice. There's no frame cutting into your sightline, and the lens wraps far enough around the face that you're not fighting the edges when you look into a corner or check over your shoulder. For riders used to more conventional cycling glasses, the difference is immediately noticeable.

The Prizm Sapphire version is our recommendation for riders doing a lot of summer riding in direct sun. Twelve percent light transmission is on the lower end — these aren't for overcast days — but in full sun they're exceptional. Glare drops sharply and the Prizm optics keep contrast where you need it: road textures, shadows, cracks, and debris read clearly rather than washing out in harsh light.

The fit does reward some patience with the nose pads. Oakley includes three sizes, and spending a few minutes finding the right one makes a real difference in stability. We'd also note that the Kato fits best on wider faces with a higher nose bridge — if you're between sizes or have a narrower face, we'd recommend trying them before committing. But for riders who fit them well, these are hard to beat.
