Juego de ruedas Mavic Cosmic S 42 Disc Info

The Mavic Cosmic S 42 Disc Wheelset is Mavic's entry point into full-carbon disc road wheels, built to bring the Cosmic name's aero and climbing reputation down to a more accessible price. At $1,369.00, it's positioned as a versatile all-around road wheel rather than a specialist aero or climbing build, aimed at riders who want one wheelset capable of undulating terrain, sustained climbs, and fast descents alike.

The rim is 100% carbon fiber, 42mm deep with a 21mm internal width and a hooked bead profile, built to Mavic's UST tubeless-ready standard so tires seat and hold pressure without needing a separate tubeless conversion kit. That internal width is wide enough to support modern 25-32mm road tires at higher volume, which Mavic designed to improve grip and cornering confidence over a narrower rim. The 42mm depth is Mavic's middle ground for road riding: enough profile for aero benefit and stability at speed, without the weight or crosswind sensitivity of a much deeper rim.

Mavic builds the hub around its Instant Drive 360 freehub system, which the company designed for light weight and low rolling friction, paired with QRM Auto bearings that self-adjust preload to stay smooth over time without regular servicing. The aluminum hub shell uses a Center Lock-only disc mount and a 12x100mm front, 12x142mm rear thru-axle setup, convertible to quick-release with separately sold adapters. This build's stock freehub is set up for Shimano and SRAM 11-speed drivetrains, and Mavic also sells conversion kits for SRAM XD, Shimano Microspline, and Campagnolo freehub bodies if a rider's drivetrain changes later.

Spokes are steel, laced 24 front and rear in a crossed-2 pattern with black steel nipples. Weight comes in at 775 grams for the front wheel and 885 grams for the rear, for a 1,660 gram pair, hand-assembled in Europe. Mavic rates the wheelset for a combined rider and bike weight up to 120 kilograms, and for road and light off-road use with jumps under 15 centimeters, which covers gravel-adjacent riding on a road or all-road bike without pushing into true mountain bike territory.

This is a wheelset for road riders who want a genuine step up to full carbon and disc-specific engineering without paying for a dedicated aero or climbing wheel, and who ride a mix of terrain where one versatile wheelset makes more sense than two specialized ones.

The RA Perspective

The Cosmic S 42 is Mavic's way of getting more riders onto full-carbon wheels without the price tag of their higher-end Cosmic builds. For someone upgrading from an alloy wheelset, the difference in how quickly the bike accelerates and holds speed is noticeable, even if this isn't Mavic's lightest or most aero option.

The 42mm depth is a genuine middle ground. It's enough rim for stability on faster descents and rolling terrain, but it doesn't turn into a handful in crosswinds the way a 50mm-plus rim can. On mixed routes with climbing, flats, and some wind exposure, that balance is more useful in practice than a deeper, more specialized wheel.

Serviceability is where Mavic's engineering shows. The QRM Auto bearings and Instant Drive 360 freehub are built to stay smooth without regular maintenance, and the option to convert the freehub body to SRAM XD, Microspline, or Campagnolo later means this wheelset isn't locked to your current drivetrain if that changes.

We'd point riders here who want their first full-carbon disc wheelset for everyday road riding and club rides, rather than a wheel built around one specific discipline like time trials or pure climbing.
