The RA Perspective

Lightweight has been making carbon wheels in Germany since 1994. When most carbon wheel brands are sourcing rims offshore and building them into wheelsets, Lightweight is doing something genuinely different — designing and handbuilding every wheel at their Friedrichshafen facility, using a continuous carbon spoke technology that doesn't exist in production wheelbuilding anywhere else.

The R2R spoke system is the thing we always explain first. A carbon fiber bundle running rim to rim through the hub body, no metal connectors, no stress concentration at the junction. We've sold a lot of carbon wheels across a lot of brands. The way a set of Lightweights accelerates and holds speed is different. The stiffness is immediate and complete, without the harsh feedback that stiff metal spokes can transmit. The carbon fiber dampens road vibration in a way metal simply can't.

The Fernweg 63 is an aero wheel — 63mm is a serious rim depth that earns its aerodynamic contribution at road race and fast road riding speeds. At 1,545g total for a disc brake wheelset at this depth, the weight competes with wheels that are 15-20mm shallower from other premium brands. You're not trading weight for aero here.

At $9,900, the question is always "is it worth it?" The honest answer: if you're coming from $2,000-3,000 carbon wheels, yes — you will feel the difference immediately. If you're comparing against a $5,000-6,000 premium wheelset, the gap is smaller but present. These aren't wheels for everyone.
