Continental Mud King 27.5" Clincher Tire Info
The tall knobs of the Continental Mud King Apex Clincher Tire add emphasis to the name. This tire is designed for digging in to loose stuff and wet stuff and everything in between. It’s a tire designed for gravity disciplines and it isn’t afraid of overbuilding, as sometimes that’s the best solution when you’re going deep and taking risks.
The tire casing is designed for extreme riding. They start with 60 TPI cloth. They then wrap it multiple times over itself—four plies, 240 TPI, on the sidewalls and six plies, 360TPI, under the tread. The bead is woven from strands of high-tensile steel. The sidewalls are stiffened with an Apex layer, extra rubber between the plies so that the tire isn’t too soft when running low pressure and taking big hits. The sidewalls have an exterior coating of a rubberized checkerboard pattern for both increased durability and a great aesthetic.
The casing is topped off by the tread, consisting of tall, widely-spaced blocks. The blocks are tall, but they are designed to stand straight, even on the edges, so that this relatively wide 2.3” tire can easily fit between fork legs and stays and suspension elements without rubbing, even on muddy, sticky days. The rubber is Continental’s Black Chili compound, which you’ll find on their road racing tires. It’s grippy and durable and has low rolling resistance, though that feature is less important than the knob shaping and spacing.
The Continental Mud King Apex Clincher Tire is the mud-ready equivalent of steel spiked ice tires.
