The RA Perspective

We sell the SES 2.3 to a specific kind of customer: someone who already knows they want a dedicated climbing wheel and isn't looking for a do-everything set. If a customer asks us for one wheelset to cover club rides, gravel days, and the occasional race, we point them somewhere else. If they're building a bike specifically to go up mountains faster and still feel composed coming back down, this is one of the better options on the wall.

The weight is real. At a claimed 690 grams for this rear wheel with tape and valve installed, it's noticeably lighter in hand than most disc wheels at this depth, and that shows up on a sustained climb in a way that's hard to fake with marketing copy. The hookless tubeless setup has been reliable in our experience, though it does mean sticking to ENVE's tire size and pressure guidance rather than running whatever tire happened to be in stock.

The tradeoff is right there in ENVE's own warning: this rim isn't built for off-road or gravel use. It's a road wheel, full stop, and pushing it outside that use case is asking for trouble given how much material ENVE stripped out to hit this weight.

We'd recommend this to a rider who does most of their riding on pavement with real elevation change — gran fondos with serious climbing, mountain century rides, or a race calendar that rewards a lighter bike. For flatter terrain or mixed surfaces, the SES 3.4 or 4.5 is the better call.
