3T Extrema Italia Red AXS XPLR Bike Info
The 3T Extrema Italia Red AXS XPLR Bike occupies a specific and demanding position in the gravel category: fast enough to race, capable enough to go anywhere. Where 3T's RaceMax 2 Italia is built for the smooth, fast end of gravel, the Extrema Italia is built for the rough end — loose, steep, technical terrain where tire width, geometry, and compliance matter as much as aerodynamics. It is still a Jazz Carbon frame made entirely in 3T's Presezzo factory in northern Italy, still equipped with SRAM Red AXS XPLR E1 and a power meter. But the geometry, the tire clearance, and the compliance tuning are built around a fundamentally different set of demands.
The frame uses the same Jazz Carbon manufacturing process as every 3T Italia: dry carbon fiber wound continuously by machine using the filament winding technique, then resin-injected under pressure through RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding). The result is a layup with no broken fiber continuity and no hand-laid inconsistencies — dense, uniform, and measurably superior to standard prepreg construction. Where the Extrema differs from the RaceMax is in how the layup and tube geometry are tuned. The seat tube is deliberately thinned and the rear of the frame optimized for vertical compliance — absorbing the kind of sustained vibration that comes from a full day on rough gravel or a multi-stage mountain race. The BB and head tube maintain the same high stiffness targets as the RaceMax, so power transfer and steering precision are not compromised. Compliance is added where you need it; stiffness is kept where you need that.
The geometry is 3T's 3Touring spec — a distinct philosophy from the RaceMax's race geometry. The head tube angle runs from 69.1° in a size small to 72° in an XL, with fork offset varying between 61 and 73mm depending on size. The result is confident, composed handling on loose or off-camber terrain without the twitchiness of a race-oriented head angle. Chainstays are 437mm across all four sizes — 17mm longer than the RaceMax — adding predictability and stability over rough ground while helping with weight distribution for loaded riding. Stack is high relative to reach, making the 3Touring position more upright and sustainable over long efforts in demanding conditions.
The tire clearance is 57mm WAM (Width-as-Measured) — enough to run 29er mountain bike tires in the 2.1–2.2" range. The bike ships with Continental Terra Adventure in 700x55, which gives you a meaningful preview of what this frame can handle. The fork is the 3T Fango Extrema Integrale with triple accessory mounts on the legs, making it a legitimate bikepacking platform. The seatpost is a round 27.2mm carbon post with zero offset — compatible with wireless dropper posts and suspension seatposts for technical descents, a feature the round seat tube enables by design. The downtube is 60mm wide immediately behind the front tire and widens toward the bottom bracket, managing airflow from the wheel over the frame and shielding the bottle position for a complete aerodynamic system despite the larger tire presence.
The drivetrain is SRAM Red AXS XPLR E1, with the crankset specced at 38T — four teeth lower than the RaceMax build — paired with the same SRAM Red XG-1391 E1 13-speed cassette spanning 10–46T. The lower front ring reflects the terrain this bike was designed for: steep, loose climbs where gear range matters more than top-end speed. The wheels are 3T Discus 45/40 LTD — 3T's own mixed-depth carbon wheels, 45mm front and 40mm rear, tubeless-ready, designed for the wide-tire gravel environment. The cockpit is the 3T Aeroghiaia Integrale LTD bar paired with the 3T More stem and integrated K-Edge GPS mount. Bar tape is 3T Prendo Tough rather than Speed — chosen for its durability on multi-day efforts.
Design Benefits
- 57mm WAM tire clearance: Fits 29er mountain bike tires in the 2.1–2.2" range, giving the Extrema legitimate off-road capability that most gravel bikes cannot match.
- 3Touring geometry with 437mm chainstays: Slacker head angles, longer rear center, and a higher-stack position make this frame stable and composed over rough terrain and comfortable across long days in the saddle.
- Dropper post ready: The round 27.2mm seat tube accepts wireless dropper and suspension seatposts, adding technical descending capability without requiring a proprietary post.
- Fork with triple accessory mounts: Three mounting positions per fork leg make the Extrema a capable bikepacking platform, not just a race bike.
- 38T chainring with 10–46T 13-speed range: Lower gearing than the RaceMax build, calibrated for the steep, loose terrain where the Extrema is at home.
Final Take
The 3T Extrema Italia Red AXS XPLR is for riders who need to go faster than an adventure bike and rougher than a race bike. It is handmade in Italy with Jazz Carbon, equipped with SRAM's top gravel groupset, and designed around terrain that other bikes avoid. If your races include technical descents, your adventures include multi-day routes, or your training involves trails that most gravel bikes cannot handle at speed, the Extrema Italia is the bike that was built for that.
