The RA Perspective

The 808 is the wheel we point customers toward when they come in knowing exactly what they want — more aero, full stop. It's not a wheel you'd recommend for mixed-terrain riding or anything with serious climbing, and most riders who ask for it already know that. The 80mm depth is the deepest in Zipp's road lineup, and the ABLC dimple pattern is doing real work at the yaw angles you actually encounter. This isn't marketing language — the dimpling is engineered to delay flow separation in crosswind conditions, which is where deep-section wheels earn their keep or reveal their weaknesses.

What we find compelling about the current version is how Zipp has managed the weight. 752g for the front wheel at 80mm depth is a figure that would have been considered exceptional even a few years ago, and it shows in how the wheel handles on undulating roads — it's not as punishing as earlier deep-section wheels were when the terrain kicks up briefly. That said, if your typical route involves prolonged climbing, the 808 is probably not your front wheel. The 454 NSW or the 404 Firecrest gives you more versatility without giving up the Firecrest aerodynamics.

For triathlon and time trial customers, the 808 front paired with a Super-9 Disc rear is still one of the most aerodynamically considered setups you can build. The hookless tubeless setup requires more attention to tire selection — tubeless-compatible tires in 25mm or 28mm only — but the ride quality payoff at lower pressures is real. We find it smooth and fast at 68–70 psi with a 28mm tire.
