The RA Perspective

The SES 4.5 is the wheel we reach for when a customer wants speed and doesn't want to think too hard about the tradeoffs. It's genuinely fast on flat and rolling terrain, and the 56mm rear rim depth holds its line in crosswinds better than we expected the first time we rode a set — ENVE's engineering around Paris-Roubaix-style cobbled racing shows up as real-world stability on chip-seal and rough pavement, not just marketing language.

Where it gives something up is climbing. It's not heavy by any measure, but at a claimed 803 grams for this rear wheel alone, it's noticeably more substantial than ENVE's own SES 2.3 climbing wheel, and you feel that extra rotating mass on sustained steep pitches. That's the expected tradeoff for a deeper rim built around high-speed stability, not a flaw in the build.

The INNERDRIVE hub has been reliable for us, and the ability to swap ratchets for faster engagement is a nice touch if you're coming from a wheel with snappier pickup and miss that feel. Just confirm your freehub body at checkout — HG, XDR, N3W, and Microspline are all offered, but they're not interchangeable after the fact.

We'd point this wheel toward a rider doing flat-to-rolling group rides, crits, or road races where speed and confident handling matter more than saving grams on a climb. If your riding is mostly mountains, the SES 2.3 is the better call.
