Lake MX177 Shoe - Wide Info

The Lake MX177 Shoe - Wide is built on Lake's MX Sport last, which gives it a roomier toe box than most mountain bike shoes — a real difference-maker for riders whose feet swell on long days or who've never quite fit a standard-width shoe comfortably. The upper combines Clarino microfiber with mesh panels placed to let the foot breathe, and Carbitex tongue panels reduce friction as the BOA dial cinches down, so the fit stays even without hot spots forming over the top of the foot.

Closure is handled by a single BOA L6 dial, a push/pull system that lets you micro-adjust tension on the fly — useful when you're tightening up before a technical descent or loosening off on a long fire-road climb. Underneath, the MX177 uses a fiberglass-injected nylon sole rather than full carbon, which Lake positions as a way to get comparable stiffness and pedaling efficiency without the price tag of a carbon-soled shoe. The Supergrip Enduro outsole pairs real rubber with Ice Lock lug inserts, giving it grip for hike-a-bike sections and loose, technical terrain where a slick sole would leave you slipping off rocks and roots.

This is a mountain bike shoe built for aggressive trail riding first, but the roomier last and all-day comfort focus mean it holds up just as well for gravel riding, bikepacking, or anyone who's on the bike for hours at a stretch and wants a shoe they can walk in comfortably off the bike. Standard SPD cleat compatibility means it works with the mountain bike pedal systems most trail and gravel riders already run. At $179.99, the MX177 sits in the middle of Lake's lineup — a shoe that trades a bit of outright stiffness for comfort, breathability, and a fit that works for wider feet without sacrificing the grip and support technical riding demands.

The RA Perspective

The wide toe box is the feature we point riders toward first, especially anyone who's struggled with numb toes or pressure points in a standard-width mountain shoe. Lake's MX Sport last genuinely gives more room up front without feeling sloppy through the heel, which is a balance a lot of wide-fit shoes don't get right.

The BOA L6 dial is simple and reliable — one point of adjustment rather than laces or multiple straps, and it's easy to loosen a click or two mid-ride if your foot swells on a hot day. The fiberglass-injected nylon sole isn't as stiff as a full carbon sole, and if you're chasing maximum pedaling efficiency for racing, that's worth knowing. But most trail riders won't notice the difference, and the tradeoff buys a shoe that's noticeably more comfortable to walk in during hike-a-bike sections.

The Supergrip Enduro outsole has held up well in wet, rocky terrain in our experience — the Ice Lock inserts actually grip on wet rock rather than just being marketing language.

We'd point riders here who spend long days on the trail or bikepacking and want a comfortable, wide-fitting shoe over the stiffest possible race sole.
