Cervelo Aspero Apex XPLR AXS Bike Info

Cervelo came to gravel from road and time trial racing, and the Aspero reflects exactly that lineage. The Cervelo Aspero Apex XPLR AXS Bike is not built for the rider who wants to pack for three nights out or stop to document the scenery. Cervelo describes the Aspero plainly: "haul ass, not cargo." This is a gravel race bike, engineered for riders who show up on mixed terrain to compete. When Cervelo launched the original Aspero in 2019, the cycling press called it "a new era of speed in gravel." The updated version is more aerodynamic, more compliant over long efforts, and more capable in the conditions that decide gravel races than the bike it replaces.

The carbon frame carries tube shaping drawn from Cervelo's road and cyclocross programs — specifically the R5-CX — with aero profiling aimed at the energy savings that compound over a long, headwind-heavy race day. Cervelo estimates the updated Aspero saves three watts over the previous version, a figure that translates to one fewer energy gel your stomach has to process over six hours into a headwind. In developing this version, Cervelo lowered the seat stays, improving rear compliance on rough terrain without adding weight or mechanical complexity. Front-end stiffness was also reduced slightly to ease fatigue in the final hours of a long race. The dropped seat stays opened up more clearance for mud — a practical benefit Cervelo worked out during the development of R5-CX and confirmed in the field at Unbound. The all-carbon tapered fork adds steering precision under hard efforts and technical descents. Both use Cervelo's own aero thru-axle design front and rear. The bottom bracket uses a T47 threaded interface in BBRight configuration — threaded for rider-serviceable maintenance compared to a press-fit shell, while the asymmetric shell width keeps the pedaling stance wide. The rear dropout uses SRAM's Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) for compatibility with current SRAM drivetrains and future Transmission systems. Cable routing is fully internal throughout.

The drivetrain is SRAM Apex XPLR AXS — fully wireless electronic shifting in a 1x, 12-speed configuration. At this price, AXS wireless is not standard; most competing builds use mechanical cables. The shift signal runs via Bluetooth with no derailleur cable to stretch, fray, or corrode on a wet race day. The XPLR cassette runs 11-44T across 12 speeds, calibrated for mixed terrain where range matters more than close-ratio spacing. The 40t chainring works with that range for steep gravel climbs and moving fast on the flat between them. Crank length scales by frame size: 165mm on the 48 and 51, 170mm on the 54 and 56, 172.5mm on the 58 and 61. Braking is SRAM Apex AXS hydraulic disc with SRAM Centerline Centerlock rotors front and rear.

The wheels are Reserve 30 GR — 30mm profile gravel-specific rims laced to Reserve's 4LD hubs, tubeless compatible front and rear. Reserve shares a parent company with Cervelo, and the 30 GR is their dedicated gravel rim, matched here to the Aspero's pace-focused character. The tires are WTB Vulpine TCS Light Fast Rolling 700x45c in a 120tpi casing with Dual DNA compound — the higher-thread-count casing improves rolling efficiency and suppleness on packed gravel, while the dual-compound rubber transitions to grip in loose or wet conditions. The handlebar is the Cervélo AB09 in carbon with a 16-degree flare. Carbon bars are not the norm on complete bikes at this price; the Aspero includes one stock. Bar width scales from 36cm on the 48 to 42cm on the 58 and 61. The Cervélo ST36 alloy stem ranges from 70mm to 100mm depending on size. The Cervélo SP19 carbon seatpost pairs with a Prologo Nago R4 PAS saddle on steel rails. The bike ships with Cervélo's front computer/accessory mount, rear accessory mount, and Smartpak top tube bag already included.

The Aspero Apex XPLR AXS is available in two colorways — Black/Charcoal and Marigold — in six sizes from 48cm to 61cm. At $4,550, it puts full AXS wireless shifting, a carbon bar, carbon seatpost, and a race-calibrated gravel frame in one complete build. Pedals are not included.

The RA Perspective

The Aspero is Cervelo doing what they do on the road — building for speed — on gravel. What stands out when you look at this build is how much comes stock that you'd normally expect to add after purchase. The AB09 carbon bar and SP19 carbon seatpost are not typical inclusions at this price. Cervelo spec'd this bike to be ridden as-delivered, not upgraded before it hits the road.

The SRAM Apex XPLR AXS groupset is where most riders' attention goes, and it earns it. Wireless electronic shifting at $4,550 is uncommon. Apex AXS shifting is crisp and reliable — it's lighter in component weight than Force and Red, but the actual shift behavior is close. For someone coming from a mechanical drivetrain, the difference is immediate. The 11-44T XPLR cassette gives you real range for steep terrain while keeping the 40t chainring working efficiently at gravel race pace.

The Reserve 30 GR wheels are well-matched to the bike's positioning. They're light for the price, and the 30mm profile balances aero efficiency with crosswind stability on exposed gravel roads. The WTB Vulpine 120tpi casing is noticeably more supple than a lower-thread-count tire and rolls faster at comparable pressure.

Where the Aspero differs from adventure-oriented gravel bikes is the riding position. The geometry is more aggressive than an endurance-focused gravel frame — riders looking for a comfort-first all-day bike should look at something else. For riders who want to race, or who want the fastest version of a gravel bike that still handles rough terrain confidently, the Aspero Apex AXS is the right tool at the right price.
