The RA Perspective

The 101 XPLR is one of the more interesting engineering decisions we've seen in a gravel wheel, because Zipp didn't just take a road rim and widen it. MOTO Technology lets the rim edges flex slightly on impact, and on rough gravel that difference is noticeable — it takes some of the sharp edge off washboard and chunky sections that would otherwise rattle straight through a stiffer carbon rim.

Going with the 650b size over 700c is the right call if you're riding genuinely rough terrain rather than smooth gravel roads. The smaller diameter with a wider tire gives you more sidewall to work with at lower pressures, and combined with the rim's built-in compliance, it's a noticeably calmer ride over the kind of terrain that beats up a rider on a long day.

Worth knowing: this rim is tubeless only, so there's no fallback to a tube-and-clincher setup if you're not ready to commit to tubeless. The ZR1 hub's 66 points of engagement is a real practical benefit on loose climbs where you need power to translate immediately rather than through some slop in the freehub.

We'd point this wheelset toward riders doing long gravel days or gravel racing on genuinely rough terrain, where the compliance actually earns its keep, rather than smoother gravel where a stiffer wheel would do just as well.
