The Kestrel Talon Frameset carries a name with real weight in carbon fiber history — Kestrel built the first production carbon fiber bike frame back in 1986, and the Talon continues that lineage as a race-focused platform built from advanced 800k high-modulus carbon fiber. At $499.99, marked down from a $1,495 retail price, it's an opportunity to build a race-oriented carbon road bike around a frame with real engineering behind it rather than a generic open-mold carbon layup.
Construction is a one-piece modular monocoque, with size-specific tube profiles engineered individually for each frame size rather than scaled uniformly across the range. A semi-sloping top tube lowers the bike's center of gravity, which helps the frame feel planted through fast corners and out-of-saddle efforts. Kestrel reinforced the bottom bracket and chainstay areas specifically to optimize power transfer, addressing the part of a frame that flexes most under a hard sprint or climbing effort — stiffness where a racer actually loads the frame, rather than stiffness for its own sake everywhere.
Ride comfort comes from the frame's H-shape seatstays, engineered with vibration-damping properties to take the edge off rough pavement without turning the frame soft under power.
