Garmin Edge Explore 3 Plus Cycling Computer Info
The Garmin Edge Explore 3 Plus Cycling Computer is a navigation-focused Garmin cycling computer with a 3-inch color touchscreen and 32 GB of storage for maps. It sits above the standard Edge Explore 3 in the lineup, adding a built-in speaker and microphone, "OK Garmin" voice control, and Wi-Fi. For riders who spend more time following routes than chasing intervals, it is built around finding a good way to get somewhere and getting back.
Routing is where the Explore 3 Plus does most of its work. Pin Drop Navigation lets you send a point from Apple Maps or Google Maps on your phone, and the Edge builds a bike route to it. Route Options lets you compare routes by elevation and bike type, and Free Flow Routing looks for routes with fewer stops and intersections. Community hazard alerts add real-time warnings about potholes, road closures and traffic obstacles, shared by other riders. With 32 GB of storage and Wi-Fi map management, the Plus can update maps without a computer, which the standard Explore 3 cannot do.
The Plus-only hardware changes how you use the device on the bike. Say "OK Garmin" and the Edge responds to voice commands, so you can interact without taking your hands off the bars. Paired with a smartphone, the speaker and microphone also support voice messages through Garmin Messenger, which are sent and played back on the device. Weather information and music playback control use a connected phone. The Edge can also show heart rate from a compatible Garmin smartwatch, calculate calories burned and VO2max, and offer a recovery advisor. Garmin Coach training plans are supported too.
Garmin rates battery life at up to 14 hours in demanding use and up to 48 hours in battery saver mode. That is two hours less than the standard Explore 3 in demanding use, a trade for the speaker and microphone hardware. The unit weighs 121.5 grams, and it carries an IPX7 water rating, which covers heavy rain. It connects over Bluetooth, ANT+ and Wi-Fi, and it has no NFC chip, so there is no contactless payment on the device.
This is a good fit for touring riders, commuters and weekend explorers who want a capable GPS device with phone-assisted routing and voice control, without moving up to a higher-end performance Edge. For riders who mostly want the navigation and don't need voice control, the standard Explore 3 is the lower-priced option in the same family.
