Garmin Edge Explore 3 Cycling Computer Info

Garmin Edge Explore 3 Cycling Computer is a navigation-focused bike computer with a 3-inch touchscreen and preloaded bike-specific maps. It is Garmin's easy-to-use option for riders who want turn-by-turn directions, route planning and ride data without the complexity of a performance-first head unit. At 118.8 grams and with IPX7 water resistance, it is built for road, gravel and commuting rides.

Navigation Built Around the Ride

The 360 by 640 pixel color display is a touchscreen, and the maps are where the Explore 3 is strongest. It offers routing tuned for road, gravel or mountain riding, shows road surface type including unpaved roads, and includes high-zoom views for finding small roads in unfamiliar areas. Garmin's Free Flow routing looks for routes with fewer stops and intersections, and Trendline popularity routing uses data from other Garmin cyclists to pick commonly ridden roads and trails.

Up Ahead lets you choose points of interest such as cafes, water fountains or public restrooms and shows how far away they are. Course preview shows distance, elevation, estimated time and surface type before you start. You can create courses on the device itself, send pins from Google Maps or Apple Maps, and sync courses from the Garmin Connect app, Strava, komoot or Ride with GPS. ClimbPro shows remaining ascent and grade on climbs. The unit stores up to 100 courses and has 32 GB of internal memory.

Battery, Safety and Connectivity

Garmin lists up to 16 hours of battery life in demanding use and up to 48 hours in battery saver mode. For safety, the Explore 3 supports LiveTrack location sharing and incident detection, which sends your location to assistance contacts after an incident when paired with your phone. It also offers road hazard alerts reported by other cyclists, a PIN-protected bike alarm and Find My Edge. It connects over Bluetooth and ANT+, works with Varia radar and lights, and can show eBike data such as assist level and battery status on compatible Bosch and Shimano systems.

Training Features

The Explore 3 includes Garmin Coach plans for beginners, daily suggested workouts, estimated VO2 max, recovery advice and nutrition and hydration alerts. Pair a compatible Garmin smartwatch or CIRQA Smart Band and Garmin Link will bring wrist-based heart rate data onto the Edge screen. Smart notifications and music controls work with a paired iPhone or Android phone.

This is the standard Edge Explore 3, listed here without the built-in speaker and microphone. For riders who want a more performance-oriented head unit, Garmin sells other Edge models, but the Explore 3 is aimed at riders who care more about finding routes and getting home than analyzing every metric.

The RA Perspective

The Explore 3 is the Edge for riders who mostly want to get somewhere new and get back. The maps are the draw. Garmin shows road surface type, offers routing for road, gravel or mountain riding, and includes Free Flow routing to find routes with fewer stops. For a rider who explores unfamiliar roads, that matters more than a long list of training metrics.

We have not spent time with this unit yet, so we cannot comment on touchscreen responsiveness in the rain or with gloves. Garmin lists IPX7 water resistance and a 3-inch display, and battery life of up to 16 hours in demanding use is enough for most long days.

The tradeoffs are clear. This is the standard model without the speaker and microphone, and it is aimed at beginners and recreational riders, not racers who want a dense performance dashboard. If you want deeper training analysis, there are other Edge models for that.

We would reach for it for commuting, gravel exploring and weekend rides in new places, especially if you want incident detection and LiveTrack in the background.
