Cervelo Aspero Rival AXS 1 Bike Info

The Cervelo Aspero Rival AXS 1 Bike is the latest version of the gravel bike that Cervelo says kicked off "a new era of speed in gravel" when the original Aspero launched in 2019. The current Aspero keeps that same brief — a fast, race-bred gravel bike rather than an adventure-touring rig — while cleaning up a handful of details that mattered to the riders who put the first version through Unbound and other long, hard gravel days. The frame gets a threaded bottom bracket, neater cable routing, a derailleur hanger built for SRAM's newest drivetrains, and a shape Cervelo describes as more aerodynamically efficient than its predecessor. For Cervelo, that aero work is less about outright speed and more about energy conservation over a long day of gravel racing — the kind of thing you don't notice until the last hour, when a headwind has been chipping away at you for six.

That threaded bottom bracket is worth pausing on. Cervelo built the Aspero around an asymmetrical T47a threaded shell, a design it first used on the R5-CX cyclocross frame. It gives you the wide-stance stiffness benefits of a press-fit BBRight setup, but in a threaded interface that's simpler to service at home or at a shop. The frame also uses SRAM's Universal Derailleur Hanger standard, which keeps the door open for SRAM's Transmission drivetrains and later developments without needing a hanger swap. Behind the seat tube, Cervelo dropped the seat stays for a bit more rear-end compliance and opened up extra mud clearance — a detail pulled directly from lessons learned racing the R5-CX through the mud at Unbound. Up front, the company eased off on stiffness slightly, aiming to keep the last hours of a long gravel race from beating up your hands and shoulders.

This Rival AXS 1 build runs a mullet drivetrain — SRAM Rival AXS E1 shifters and a Rival 1 AXS E1 crankset with a 46-tooth chainring, paired to a SRAM GX Eagle AXS rear derailleur and a GX Eagle 10-52T, 12-speed cassette. That combination borrows the wide range of a mountain bike cassette and puts it behind road-style shifters, so you get a genuinely low climbing gear for punchy gravel pitches without giving up the ergonomics of drop-bar shifting. SRAM Rival E1 hydraulic disc brakes with Paceline Centerlock rotors handle stopping power, wet or dry, loose gravel or pavement.

Wheels are Cervelo's own Reserve 40|44TA GR carbon set — a 40mm-deep front and 44mm-deep rear, both tubeless compatible and built on Reserve hubs. They're wrapped in WTB Vulpine TCS tires in a 700x45 width, a fast-rolling gravel tire with enough volume to smooth out chatter without dragging on hardpack. The cockpit pairs a Cervelo AB09 carbon handlebar — 31.8mm clamp with a 16-degree flare for extra control in the drops on loose terrain — with a Cervelo ST36 alloy stem and a Cervelo SP19 carbon seatpost. A Fizik Vento Argo X3 saddle rounds out the contact points. Cervelo also builds in a Smartpak top tube storage bag along with front and rear accessory mounts, so you can carry a computer, lights, or extra nutrition without strapping on aftermarket cages.

The Aspero Rival AXS 1 is built for riders who want to race gravel or push long, fast days on mixed terrain without needing a second bike for the pavement sections. The wide-range mullet drivetrain suits routes with real elevation, the tire and frame clearance handle rough, technical gravel, and the aero-minded frame shape means you're not giving up much when the road smooths out. It's a bike built around one job — going fast over inconsistent terrain for a long time — and every spec on this build supports that.

The RA Perspective

We like this build because it doesn't pretend the Aspero is anything other than a race bike for gravel. The mullet drivetrain is the standout feature here — pairing SRAM's Rival AXS road shifters with a GX Eagle AXS rear derailleur and a 10-52T cassette gives you a genuinely low gear for steep, loose climbs, which matters more on gravel than most riders expect until they're grinding up a doubletrack pitch in the wrong gear.

The threaded T47a bottom bracket is a small thing that makes a real difference over time. Press-fit bottom brackets on gravel bikes tend to develop creaks after a season of mud and grit finds its way in — a threaded shell is easier to service and less prone to that headache.

The tradeoff on this build is the wheelset and tire choice lean toward speed over outright durability. The Reserve 40|44TA carbon wheels and 45mm WTB Vulpine tires are quick on hardpack and mixed gravel, but if you're riding rockier or more technical terrain regularly, you'll want to keep an eye on tire pressure and consider a burlier tire before a rough event.

This is the bike we'd point toward for someone training for or racing gravel events like a local century or a longer regional race, not someone looking to bikepack for a week. It rewards fitness and rewards riding it hard, and the wide-range drivetrain means it won't leave you stranded on the climbs when the legs are tired.
