Scott Spark RC SL Bike Info

The Scott Spark RC SL Bike is the top of what is already a remarkable race pedigree. The Spark platform has accumulated more elite-level cross-country wins than any other mountain bike, and the Gen5 RC SL is where that record meets its most capable expression: Scott's lightest HMX SL carbon, automated Flight Attendant suspension, the full SRAM XX SL Transmission drivetrain with integrated power meter, and a build spec that leaves nothing to compromise. This is not a trail bike that dabbles in XC racing — it's engineered from the frame up for the demands of the race course.

The HMX SL carbon frame weighs 1,427 grams painted, without shock — a 12 percent reduction over the previous generation. Gen5 also brings a redesigned suspension architecture that delivers four-bar-like performance through a single-pivot design. A short-link linkage rotates around the bottom bracket, with a pivot positioned just below the crankset. A flex pivot handles the first millimeter of travel — the high-frequency, small-bump chatter that a full race course delivers relentlessly — before engaging progressively through the remaining 120mm. The rear shock mounts deep inside the downtube, where the frame is already structurally reinforced against pedaling loads, which let Scott add shock support without a meaningful weight penalty. CeramicSpeed Alpha BSA bearings are standard at the bottom bracket, titanium hardware is used throughout the frame, and the headset includes a ±0.5° angle-adjust system that lets riders drop the head tube angle to 65.4° when the course calls for it. The Syncros Octopus Gen2 cable routing system runs all lines through the headset fully internally, with color-coded flexible housings that make trailside setup and adjustment manageable.

Flight Attendant is what separates the Spark RC SL from every other XC build in the lineup. The RockShox SID Ultimate Flight Attendant fork and SIDLuxe Ultimate Flight Attendant rear shock — 190x45mm, Solo Air — use wireless sensors and an accelerometer to read terrain and rider input in real time, automatically switching between lockout, pedaling support, and full descent modes. On a sustained climb it locks down for maximum power transfer. Hit a technical rock section and the suspension opens before you consciously had to make the choice. In cross-country racing, where a course can flip from a fireroad sprint to a loose, rooted descent in a single corner, that automation is practical. Managing suspension manually costs focus and sometimes costs time. Flight Attendant removes that calculation. Nino Schurter was among the first riders to test and help develop the system on the Spark platform — the context in which this technology was designed to perform.

The spec underneath the suspension matches the frame. SRAM XX SL Eagle AXS Transmission handles shifting and power measurement — the crankset includes an integrated spider power meter — with a 34T ring and a 10-52 12-speed cassette. SRAM Motive Ultimate 4-piston calipers and CLX Centerline rotors (180mm front, 160mm rear) provide stopping power. Wheels are DT Swiss XRC 1200 Spline, tubeless ready, wrapped in Maxxis Aspen 29x2.4 Race Edition tires at 120TPI with Maxxspeed compound. The RockShox Reverb AXS dropper handles the seatpost, and the cockpit is a full Syncros IC-M100-SL1 one-piece integrated bar and stem in HMX SL carbon — matched to the frame material. Internal frame storage houses the Syncros Save the Day kit — spare tube and multi-tool — while the bar ends hold a Syncros tubeless kit and the Syncros XC Lock-On grips include plug kit storage. Arrive at the start line with everything you need already on the bike.

The Spark RC SL is available in Piano Black / Carbon Black in sizes Small through XL, all on 29-inch wheels, with a claimed complete weight of 9.9 kg. This is a bike for the XC racer who has already done the work — knows their power numbers, trains with data, and wants equipment that matches that level of commitment. At $14,999, it asks a lot. It delivers a lot in return.

The RA Perspective

The Spark RC SL is where everything Scott has learned from years at the front of XC racing gets compressed into one build. When we talk about this bike at the shop, we start with the Flight Attendant suspension — not because the HMX SL carbon doesn't impress, but because automated suspension control is the kind of upgrade that changes how you approach a race lap. You stop thinking about your lockout and start thinking about your race. On mixed-terrain courses — climbs that transition quickly into rooted descents — the difference is real. The shock opens when it should. You don't have to remember.

The frame is exactly as light as the spec sheet suggests. At 1,427g, the HMX SL carbon gives you everything going into the frameset and nothing extra. The new flex-pivot suspension linkage is the detail we find ourselves explaining most: it handles small-bump compliance at the top of travel — the constant chatter that stiffens you up on a long race lap — then ramps progressively for bigger hits. Combined with the Maxxis Aspen setup and DT Swiss XRC 1200 wheels, it's a fast bike that stays composed over rough ground.

The SRAM XX SL Transmission drivetrain has been dependable in our experience, and the integrated spider power meter makes this a training tool as much as a race bike. The Reverb AXS dropper post is the right call for any XC course that asks you to actually descend.

The rider for this bike already knows what they want from their equipment. The Spark RC SL meets them there.
