Lightweight Meilenstein 24D Disc Schwarz Clincher Wheelset Info
Even a disc brake road bike deserves the lightest, strongest possible wheelset that will fit between the dropouts. Lightweight has adapted their Meilenstein Clincher wheelset for disc brake bikes, and, as you should expect, it’s unlike any other wheelset on the market. Behold the Lightweight Meilenstein C 24D Wheelset. The C is for Clincher. 24 is the rim width. D is for disc braking.
The rim profile should be pretty well known by this time. Lightweight first came to market with a super-exclusive, super light, aero wheelset that only seemed to be the province of the best racers in the world, and that set had many of the same marks you see here. It had a moderate depth, all-carbon construction (rim, spokes, hubs), was super light, and super strong. This is the latest update of that original wheel. It has a depth of 48mm, a width of 24mm, is still all-carbon, and still has relatively few spokes (20 front and rear).
This wheel is designed as an all-rounder, one that does everything well, though it leans a bit toward bigger hills. The depth is no hindrance climbing as the wheels are so light; and then the depth and aero shape comes to the fore when going fast. The spokes are bladed as well to give you as much of an edge as is technologically possible.
Lightweight has already deployed this rim on rim-brake wheelsets. To move it to disc, the dishing, spoking, and hubs had to be modified. You’ll notice a pentagonal hub in the middle of the wheel. Disc brake rotors bring heat and torsion to hub bodies. These are traditionally bad things for hubs. But the hub shape helps deal with braking forces. The spokes wrap around the hub for strength. The carbon fiber hub shell is mated with a pentagonal aluminum sleeve and epoxied together for both strength and heat dissipation. The disc rotor itself rides on a splined aluminum shelf designed for compatibility with Centerlock rotors. Lightweight designed the hub to work with 140-160mm rotor diameters.
The hub internals are set up for thru-axles. 12 or 15mm by 100mm front axle and 12mm by 135 or 142mm rear. It can be adapted to quick release with an accessory kit. The rear cassette body comes either as a Campagnolo or SRAM/Shimano compatible 9/10/11-speed.
Weight is 650g for the front wheel, 730g for the rear. Max bike and rider weight is 120kg. Recommended tire widths are 25-32mm.
There are two different versions, Standard and Schwarz (Black). The latter has black logos and CeramicSpeed bearings in the hub.
All versions and configurations come with Lightweight wheel bags, tire levers, and Lightweight valve extenders. A speedometer magnet is embedded in the rims. Rim strips are unnecessary.
The Lightweight Meilenstein C 24D Clincher Wheelset are the wheels that equal the best rim brake sets on the market.
