SRAM was founded in Chicago in 1987 by Stan Day, a triathlete who saw a better way to shift — from the handlebars, not the downtube. Day partnered with engineer Sam Patterson, who built the first prototype of what became Grip Shift: a twist shifter that changed how riders interacted with their drivetrains. That single innovation launched one of cycling's major component companies, now privately held and still headquartered in Chicago.
