Pinarello Dogma F vs. Colnago Y1Rs vs. Cervelo S5: Which Pro Race Bike Is Right for You?

Albert Cabbad |

Three bikes. Three philosophies. One question every serious rider eventually asks: which is best?

The Pinarello Dogma F, Colnago Y1Rs, and Cervelo S5 are all raced at the highest level of professional cycling. All three are made from the most advanced carbon fiber available. All three will outperform nearly anything else you’ve ridden. The differences between them are real — but they’re not about quality. They’re about what each bike is optimized for, and which of those priorities matches how you ride.

This guide breaks down each bike honestly, then tells you how to choose.

Pinarello Dogma F road bike — INEOS Grenadiers race bike

The Bikes at a Glance

Before getting into the detail, here’s the short version.

The Pinarello Dogma F is an Italian all-rounder — aero enough for flat stages, light enough for climbs, refined enough for day-to-day riding at an aggressive level. It’s the most balanced of the three.

The Colnago Y1Rs is Colnago’s dedicated aero model — purpose-built for flat and rolling terrain where aerodynamics determine outcomes. It’s the most narrowly focused of the three.

The Cervelo S5 is the benchmark for aerodynamic performance in road cycling. If maximizing speed on flat terrain is the priority above everything else, nothing on this list does it more directly.

Pinarello Dogma F: The Art of Balance

What it is

The Dogma F is INEOS Grenadiers’ race weapon — the bike that Carlos Rodríguez, Geraint Thomas, and the broader INEOS roster have ridden through Grand Tours and Classics campaigns. Pinarello built it around TORAYCA M40X carbon throughout: a material that allowed engineers to increase lateral stiffness at the bottom bracket and torsional stiffness through the head tube while keeping the frame weight at a claimed 941g.

The design is unmistakably Pinarello — asymmetric frame construction that accounts for drivetrain-side loading, the distinctive fork rake, and a visual identity that has been at the front of professional cycling for decades. The Dogma F is aero-conscious without being a pure aero bike. Pinarello reduced aerodynamic drag versus the previous generation without chasing the aggressive tube profiles that make pure aero bikes demanding in crosswinds. Tire clearance runs to 30mm. The riding position is aggressive but not extreme.

Who it’s for

The Dogma F suits riders who want one bike that excels across varied terrain — climbing days, fast group rides, rolling gran fondos, and everything in between. It’s the choice if you’re not willing to compromise one dimension of performance for another, and if Italian craft and racing heritage matter as much as the spec sheet.

At RA Cycles

The Dogma F Frameset starts at $7,250. Special edition colors and fully custom MYWAY color options are available at additional cost — if you want a Dogma that’s genuinely one of a kind, MYWAY is the path. We build Dogma F bikes to order with Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo groupsets. View and configure our custom Dogma F builds →

Colnago Y1Rs: Aero at Colnago’s Level

What it is

The Y1Rs is a different animal from Colnago’s V5Rs — while the V5Rs is the brand’s celebrated all-round race weapon favored by Pogacar and UAE Team Emirates, the Y1Rs is Colnago’s dedicated aero platform. The name reflects the mission: it’s built for one thing.

The aerodynamic numbers are significant. Colnago claims 19% less frontal area versus their all-round platform and 20 watts saved at 50kph — a meaningful margin that shows up on flat and rolling terrain at race pace. The frame uses a curved downtube and gull-wing tube cross-sections that manage airflow more aggressively than traditional profiles, paired with the proprietary CC.Y1 integrated handlebar and stem with WYND technology for front-end aerodynamic optimization. The frame weighs 965g — a predictable tradeoff for pure aero construction. Head tube angle runs at 73–73.5°, giving the Y1Rs a direct, responsive character at speed.

What distinguishes Colnago’s execution here is the construction quality. The paint finish and detail work on the Y1Rs reflect Colnago’s position as one of the few remaining brands where craft is genuinely part of the product — not a marketing claim.

Who it’s for

The Y1Rs is for riders whose home terrain is flat to rolling and who want maximum speed on those roads without reservations. If you race crits, do fast club rides on open terrain, or want the aero race-day experience alongside Colnago’s construction quality, this is the one. It’s also the answer for riders who want a pure aero bike but aren’t drawn to the Canadian engineering-first approach of the Cervelo.

At RA Cycles

The Y1Rs Frameset starts at $7,500. Complete builds are configured to order: Shimano Di2, SRAM AXS, and Campagnolo Super Record WRL are all available. Configure your custom Y1Rs build →

Cervelo S5: The Aero Benchmark

What it is

The Cervelo S5 is the reference point for aerodynamic road racing. Visma Lease a Bike — the team of Jonas Vingegaard, Wout van Aert, and Matteo Jorgenson — races it, and that team’s results on flat stages and time trials have been the S5’s most visible proof of concept.

The 2026 S5 pushed aerodynamic performance further: Cervelo reduced drag by a claimed 6+ watts at race speed versus the prior generation while removing 124g from the overall build. The fork legs and head tube received the most significant redesign, moving to a deeper aerodynamic profile that manages frontal-area airflow more effectively. The integrated one-piece handlebar and stem continues Cervelo’s long-standing front-end aerodynamic philosophy. The 34mm tire clearance — the most generous of the three bikes here — reflects the understanding that wider tires at lower pressures roll faster on real roads.

The S5 frame is not the lightest here. Cervelo made an explicit engineering choice: aerodynamic performance is the priority. On flat terrain at steady race pace, that tradeoff wins. On sustained mountain climbs, riders who choose the Dogma F will have an edge.

What the S5 asks in return is commitment. The integrated cockpit limits post-purchase adjustability. The position is aggressive. Riders who climb regularly, ride on exposed roads with significant crosswinds, or want a bike that adapts to varied conditions will feel the S5’s constraints.

Who it’s for

The S5 is for the rider who wants the fastest road bike on flat terrain and is willing to commit fully to that goal. If you train and race primarily on flat courses, compete in triathlons, or want the purest expression of aerodynamic road cycling, the S5 gives you the clearest answer of the three.

At RA Cycles

Complete S5 builds start at $10,100 with the Ultegra Di2 build. The Force AXS build is $10,250 — a strong value at this performance tier. The Dura-Ace Di2 build tops out at $14,350. The S5 is no longer offered as a standalone frameset. View all Cervelo S5 builds at RA Cycles →

Head-to-Head: What the Numbers Say

Aerodynamics: The Cervelo S5 leads, followed closely by the Colnago Y1Rs. Both are built explicitly around aerodynamic performance. The Dogma F is competitive but doesn’t chase the same coefficient of drag.

Climbing weight: The Dogma F’s 941g frame edges the Y1Rs (965g). The S5’s frame weight is not published — Cervelo’s acknowledged tradeoff for maximum flat-road performance.

Tire clearance: S5 leads at 34mm. Y1Rs at 32mm. Dogma F at 30mm. All three are meaningfully wider than the 25mm standard of a decade ago.

Geometry: The Y1Rs (73–73.5°) and S5 (73°) run a similar aggressive head tube angle. The Dogma F’s 74.4° seat tube angle places the rider slightly more forward — a subtle but cumulative difference on long rides.

Price at RA Cycles (complete builds): S5 from $10,100. Dogma F from $15,750. Y1Rs custom to order from a $7,500 frameset.

Pro team association: Dogma F — INEOS Grenadiers. Y1Rs — Colnago race program. S5 — Visma Lease a Bike (Vingegaard, Van Aert, Jorgenson).

The Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?

There is no wrong answer among these three. All are legitimate race bikes that will transform how your riding feels. The question is which transformation you’re after.

Choose the Pinarello Dogma F if you ride varied terrain and want one bike that performs across all of it without compromise.
