Shimano PD-M540 Pedals Info
In the quest for speed and efficiency, lighter is always better. These Shimano PD-M540 Pedals are about 25 grams lighter than the M520 pedals. While that might not seem like much, about the equivalent of an energy gel packet, remember that saving rotating mass is worth more than static mass. The oft-used standard in top-level motorsports equates that 1 lb of rotational weight savings is worth 4 lbs on the frame. And we can only surmise that it's even more important when you are the motor! Put your money where it matters.

The M540 pedals have a smaller body than the M520 pedals, and this contributes to the weight savings. The minimalist pedal body is lightweight aluminum and spins around a tough chromoly spindle on a sealed cup and cone bearing system. And like all SPD pedals, they have an adjustable retention system that can be set to your release preferences with a small hex key on the back of the mechanism - soft for easy release or firm for more security.
The Shimano PD-M540 Pedals come with two-bolt SM-SH51 Single-Release cleats that offer 4° of float to allow some movement in your ankle as you pedal. They are also compatible with the easier-to-release SM-SH56 Multi-Release cleats. These are the classic SPD pedals.
