Castelli's Meccanico Wool Sweater is the equivalent to a throwback jersey. “Back in the day,” cyclists wore wool, and they ran around in fields to keep some fitness-and slam some blood back into their freezing feet-in a cross-training sport dubbed cyclocross.
The Meccanico Sweater updates that classic look with modern fabrics by blending the wool with modern yarns for better stretch, fit, warmth, and durability. There's 90 percent polyester, 7 percent wool, and 3 percent Lycra for a layer that's soft enough to wear against your skin. Or add a base layer beneath it for extra warmth.
Castelli adds extra-durable, water resistant material to the shoulders-so if you sling a bike up there for a run-up, there's some extra thickness and strength there. The jersey does not have rear pockets, but does have side pockets to warm your hands in between efforts. A full-length zipper makes it easy to vent as needed.
