Castelli Elemento 2 Jacket Info
Storied Italian cycling clothing brand Castelli is constantly innovating, and that's not just marketing hype. The company's new Elemento 2 Jacket is proof positive; it's the latest evolution of outerwear that blends Castelli's proprietary windproof 7x(AIR) fabric – which Castelli claims to offer seven times better air permeability and breathability that other fabrics – with Alpha Construction that the company pioneered in 2014 with the Alpha Jacket. Alpha Construction utilizes a breathable, stretchy, woven fabric with the look of a soft shell that offers supreme air flow and ventilation. Together, the two innovations combine to make one fantastic piece of cycling gear.
The 7x(Air) fabric has a windproof and water resistant exterior combined with a soft, fleece interior that provides warmth and extra comfort. The Elemento 2 really shines at moisture wicking and dissipation – you'll stay dry even during your toughest efforts. Although the exterior is treated to shed water, all that breathability does mean that the Elemento 2 is vulnerable to rain penetration on really wet days. It's intended as a cold-but-dry-weather, big miles jacket more than as true rain wear.
The full zipper down the jacket's front allows for maximum ventilation and will also hasten the moisture transfer of the interior thermal layer. WindShear material keeps drafts out, while the quilted thermal 7xAir fabric keeps you toasty without accumulating clammy sweat. A fleece warp-around collar provides extra protection, comfort and warmth to the face and neck.
The waist and wrist cuffs stay tight to remain locked in place and lie flat. Despite the Elemento 2 Jacket's serious warmth, it still provides a streamlined, aerodynamic fit and is relatively light weight at 545 grams. Castelli rates the Elemento 2 Jacket for use in a 32 to 53 degree Fahrenheit temperature range, although layering combinations can certainly extend that sweet spot lower. Three external rear pockets in back provide plenty of storage space, and a vertical zippered pocket on the chest securely stores keys and other valuables.
If you ride in cold, dry conditions, the Elemento 2 Jacket could be your new best friend. Bundle up and mount your steed!
