Assos T.campionissimo S7 Bib Short Info
Assos is a family business where everyone rides. Part of their pleasure is pushing the envelope of cycling clothing so they, their friends, and the cycling world can benefit. The T.campionissimo S7 Bib Short marks the fruition of lots of work into making a radically better cycling bottom. They designed the campionissimo as a no-limit garment, and the price certainly reflects everything that has gone into it. Assos even goes so far as to state this is not an every-day short, but an epic ride kind of bottom. Not for the donut ride, but the gruelathon you've been training months for. Each element they put into this short is different than other brands top bottoms and also the furthest evolution of their own.
The first thing that makes the campionissimo different is the chamois. While it does share the kukuPenthouse front with the cento, the goldenGate sides, memory foam, aerated waffle material with the other S7 pads, it is shaped more aggressively than the other chamois. The kukuPenthouse is a fascinating innovation. They basically cut out the front padding and replaced it with a soft, stretchy, barely-padded microfiber. This allows the family jewels more comfort, as they're not packed in by the pad.
The second big change is the material. The Type A.444 ergoKompressor fabric is a stretchy woven material that is thinner and stretches better than anything you've ever experienced. Take it out of the box for the first time, and it will look too small. Rest assured, it will stretch. It takes a little time to get into them. Gently work them up your legs, around your middle, and then slip of the straps. Then lean forward…ooooh. It's there and not there at the same time.
The third difference is the cut. Yes, the advanced ergonomic panel design is similar, if more aggressive, to other Assos bibs, but it's just that little more precise and more comfortable. As with all the S7 shorts, there's a Y-frame back, which has a non-stretchy panel onto which everything is hung. This centers the short and helps them stay in place more easily. They don't come up as high in the front, which might feel odd at first, but once you're in the drops, you'll appreciate the freedom. The bib straps are both wider and set wider than what you're used to, with appliqué stitching near the top in front. While an easy assumption is that the stitching is for aesthetics, there are actually multiple purposes. They help keep the straps flat for greater comfort, and they serve a second function as sunglass loops. Just stick a temple in and fold them down, zip your jersey back up and they'll be there for you.
And then there's everything else these shorts do differently and better. Assos is proud of the fact that their shorts are 18-43% more abrasion-resistant than most cycling bottoms. This has dividends not only in terms of crashing, but also washing: shorts abrade in the washing machine and these shorts can last much longer because of Assos' attention to this detail. The material has also been treated with iceColor, a finish that helps reflect sunlight off the material, both helping it last longer and keeping you cooler. The material has been created to grip saddles better, so you're not sliding around. And the thin grippers at the bottom are comfortable, hold well, and don't squeeze your legs into funny shapes.
Campionissimo are one of those items of clothing that is as high-tech as your bike. Most importantly, you feel free and fast. A little speed boost from your bibs.
The Assos T.campionissimo S7 Bib Short is the good kind of crazy, the high-performing crazy that helps with your ride.
