The RA Perspective

Zipp's been refining deep-section carbon wheels since 1988, and the 404 NSW is where that experience actually shows up on the road — this isn't a wheel that's fast in a straight line but nervous the moment a crosswind picks up. The Sawtooth dimpling on the rim genuinely changes how the wheel behaves in gusty conditions compared to older smooth-sided deep-section wheels we've run in the past.

The Cognition hub is solid and low-maintenance, and the XDR driver body means it drops right onto most modern SRAM and Shimano 11-speed drivetrains without any compatibility surprises. Setting it up tubeless is straightforward, and running it at a lower pressure than you'd expect on a race wheel actually improves the ride quality noticeably on rougher roads.

The honest tradeoff is that this is a race-specific wheel, not an all-around training wheel. At 58mm deep, it's more wheel than most riders need for everyday miles, and the price reflects genuine aerodynamic engineering rather than just carbon and a deep rim.

We'd put this wheel under a rider who's racing seriously — road racer or triathlete — and wants a rear wheel that holds speed and holds its line, not someone looking for a do-everything training wheel.
