The RA Perspective

We like the RX801 for riders who've been squeezed by standard-width gravel shoes but still want a genuinely stiff platform, not a compromise. The wide last gives real room through the forefoot without turning the shoe soft or vague underfoot — it still feels like a race shoe, just one that fits.

On the bike, the carbon sole transfers power cleanly on long climbs and sustained efforts, and the BOA Li2 dial makes on-the-fly adjustments easy when your feet swell over a long ride. The secondary toe-box strap is a nice touch for wide-footed riders specifically, since it lets you fine-tune pressure up front independent of the rest of the fit.

Where it's less convincing is walkability. The sole is stiff enough that it does fine on smooth dismounts and short walks, but it's not a shoe we'd recommend for a lot of hike-a-bike on loose or rocky terrain — the tread pattern is minimal and the sole doesn't flex much underfoot. If your gravel routes involve regular off-bike scrambling, that's worth knowing going in.

We'd steer this toward gravel racers and gran fondo riders with wider feet who want race stiffness without a narrow fit, and who aren't expecting a hiking shoe when they're off the bike.
