The RX801 rides like Shimano brought its road racing philosophy to a gravel shoe. The stiffness is immediately noticeable — on sustained gravel climbs or long stretches at threshold, there's very little flex to rob your effort, which is exactly what riders chasing gravel race results are looking for.

The DYNALAST toe-spring shaping is subtle but real. It smooths out the top of the pedal stroke in a way that's easy to miss consciously but noticeable if you go back to a stiffer, more traditional sole afterward. Off the bike, the shoe walks better than most race-stiff options thanks to the heel stabilizer and wider contact patch, though it's still not going to feel like a hiking shoe on a long hike-a-bike section.

One thing worth knowing before you order: several riders have found the RX801 runs a touch snug compared to other Shimano shoes, so if you're between sizes, it's worth sizing up rather than down.

We'd recommend this one for gravel racers and gran fondo riders who spend most of their time in the saddle and want maximum power transfer, rather than bikepackers who expect to be off the bike and walking for long stretches.
