Partington R-Series Performance 50/50 Wheelset Info

Partington R-Series Performance 50/50 Wheelset is the entry point to Partington's all-new R-Series, a 50mm carbon road wheelset designed, developed, tested and manufactured in Australia. The 50mm profile front and rear is the all-rounder of the range, aimed at riders who want aero gains on flat roads without giving up control on climbs, descents and gusty days. Partington lists the wheelset at 1,200 grams, with a tolerance of plus or minus 1 percent.

A Ground-Up Redesign

Partington describes the R-Series as a complete redesign of its carbon road wheels, not a step change from the MKII line. The rim, spoke and hub were developed together as one system, and the brand's stated goal is for each part to work with the others rather than being tuned alone. The rim is the AERON carbon fiber construction, a multi-material composite using Toray fibers around a PMI foam core. Partington says the foam damps road vibration and stabilizes the carbon structure so the laminate can be tuned for radial compliance, which is intended to cut rider fatigue on rough roads.

Rim shapes were developed in-house and refined through CFD analysis and testing at the SASI wind tunnel in Adelaide. Partington says it looked at more than outright drag. It balanced aerodynamic forces around the steering axis to reduce steering disturbances, so the wheels are meant to feel calmer in crosswinds and need fewer corrections. The brand describes the 50mm depth as a balance between aerodynamic efficiency across typical yaw angles and stable handling.

Rim, Spokes and Tires

The rims are hooked, work with tubeless or tubed tires, and need no rim tape. Inner width is 23mm and outer width is 34mm. The wheelset is optimized for tires up to 30mm, with a recommended 28mm front and 30mm rear, compatibility from 28mm to 32mm, and a maximum pressure of 87 psi. That puts it squarely in modern wide-tire territory, where a tubeless setup on this kind of rim tends to give the best mix of speed and grip.

Partington FLEXON carbon spokes are made from continuous Toray intermediate-modulus carbon fiber and laid out 18 front, 21 rear. They are replaceable, using steel pins and inserts. Partington lists lateral stiffness for the 50mm wheel at 42 N/mm.

Hub and Drive

The PERFORM hub is an anodized silver aluminum design that Partington shaped with finite element analysis to cut mass while holding stiffness. Its floating bearing architecture is arranged for low rolling friction, long bearing life and an even spread of load, and the Performance wheelset uses steel bearings. The freehub is a self-contained ratchet system, available for Shimano HG, SRAM XDR and Campagnolo N3W.

The ratchet was redesigned for the R-Series and has 68 engagement points, a 38 percent increase over the MKII wheelsets. A helical drive system is meant to keep engagement positive under heavy load, with minimal freewheeling drag. When you stand out of a corner or jump on a sprint, that means less slack before the wheel picks up drive. Brakes are Centerlock disc only.

Who It Suits

This is a wheelset for road racing, fast group rides and long days where wind and mixed terrain are part of the plan. The stated system weight limit is 110 kg, which covers rider, bike and gear together, so heavier riders should check that figure before buying. Partington also offers the same platform in a Ti version with ceramic bearings and a titanium ratchet; the Performance wheelset is the steel-bearing option in the range.

Each wheel ships with a padded wheel bag, a bidon, an exercise towel, a valve and a rotor lockring. Partington covers the wheels with a 2-year manufacturer warranty and a multi-year crash replacement program, both requiring registration at time of purchase. Decals are available in Strong White and Subtle White.

The RA Perspective

The 50/50 Performance is the sensible way into the R-Series. A 50mm rim front and rear gives you most of what a deep wheel is for, and Partington says it tuned the shape to stay steady in crosswinds, which is the main thing that makes a 50 easier to live with than a 65 on open roads. At 1,200 grams and with a stiffness figure of 42 N/mm, it also looks like a wheel meant to climb as well as it rolls.

The new ratchet is the part we would pay attention to. With 68 engagement points and a helical drive, it should pick up power quickly when you stand and sprint, and Partington's foam-core rim construction is aimed at taking some of the buzz out of rough pavement. We can't speak to how much of that you will notice on a long ride, so treat those as the brand's intent rather than a guarantee.

The tradeoffs are straightforward. This version uses steel bearings, where the Ti wheelset moves to ceramic bearings and a titanium ratchet. The system weight limit is 110 kg including bike and kit, and the rims are built for 28 to 32mm tires, so a narrow tire setup is out. It is Centerlock disc only.

We would reach for this on fast group rides, road races and rolling events where you want aero speed without a deep-section wheel pushing you around. Run 28mm up front and 30mm out back, as Partington recommends.
