The CX403 is Lake's best road shoe, and it shows in every detail. This is the model we point serious racers and performance-focused riders toward when they want the full Lake experience — no compromises on materials, construction, or fit technology.

The Klite kangaroo leather upper is what most people notice first. It's lighter and more breathable than the standard kangaroo leather Lake uses on other models, and it has a quality that's immediately apparent when you hold the shoe. Combined with the Carbitex OmniFlex stabilizer panels, the upper manages to feel luxurious and race-functional at the same time — soft enough to conform to the foot, structured enough to prevent flex under load.

The Race Last is worth paying attention to. It's Lake's slimmest-fitting road last — narrower through the toe box and heel than the Competition last — and it's designed specifically for high-cadence riding. Riders who've tried the CX333-N and found the fit right will feel at home here. Riders coming from a more neutral-fit shoe should try them on first if possible; the Race Last is specific.

The double-layer carbon sole is something we talk about a lot with Lake shoes because it genuinely solves a real problem. Pure carbon soles are great for power but can become uncomfortable over long efforts as blood flow gets restricted at the forefoot. The flexible inner platform prevents that without giving up stiffness where it matters. We've had customers wear these through 5+ hour events without the foot discomfort that usually appears in hour three.

At $599.99, the CX403 is an investment. But it's one of the few shoes in this price range where every dollar is accounted for.
