The RA Perspective

The value proposition on this wheel is straightforward: it's HED's race-proven disc aero shape, on disc brakes, without the price tag of the full-carbon Jet Black. The hybrid alloy-and-carbon-fairing construction adds a little weight compared to an all-carbon disc, but on a disc wheel specifically, most of the aerodynamic benefit comes from the shape, not the material, so you're not giving up much where it counts.

We like that HED kept the same 21mm internal, 25mm external rim width across this and the rest of the Jet RC Pro lineup. It means the wheel is built around modern, wider tires rather than assuming everyone is still running a narrow 23mm time trial tubular, which matters if you're setting this up on a triathlon bike where comfort over a long ride counts for something.

Disc wheels are the most wind-sensitive wheel on the bike, and that's worth knowing going in — even with HED's stability tuning, a gusty crosswind day on an exposed course will make itself known through the back of the bike more than it would with a standard wheel. It's a tradeoff most TT and triathlon riders accept for the aero gain, but it's not nothing.

We'd point this wheel at a triathlete or time trialist who wants a legitimate race disc wheel on disc brakes and doesn't need the last percentage point of weight savings that comes with a full-carbon build. It's the disc wheel we'd recommend for someone building a fast race bike on a real budget rather than an unlimited one.
