The Garmin Varia UT 800 Smart Headlight is a powerful, rechargeable headlight that works great on its own, and works even better when paired with a Garmin Edge computer. The pairing should not only increase your safety, but also the life of the battery.
The basics are that it’s an 800-lumen lamp that has five different modes. At full power, aka high mode, 800 lumens, it lasts for 1.5 hours. The other four are medium (400 lumens, three hours), low (200 lumens, six hours), night flash (100-300 lumens, six hours), and day flash (700 lumens, 25 hours). When in high, it can be seen from a half-mile away.
The unit measures 3.8” long by 1.3” wide by 1.2” high (98.6x 33.5 x 29.7mm). The unit has a waterproof rating of IPX7, which is defined as incidental exposure to water of up to one meter for up to 30 minutes. It weighs 140g.
Where it gets really amazing is when paired with compatible Edge computers. With the pairing, the beam intensity auto-adjusts. It takes into account your speed and light conditions, so that it’s no brighter than you need it.
