Garmin HRM-Tri & HRM-Swim Heart Rate Strap Bundle Info
This bundle package of the Garmin HRM-Tri/HRM-Swim is designed to help out those athletes who do just as much pool training as open water. If you can’t make up your mind, jump for the bundle and save yourself a few bucks.
The HRM-Swim has been designed specifically for swimming in enclosed pools. That’s not to say that you can’t use this in open water swims; it’s just that it solves one of the biggest problems swimmers in pools face, especially if they are accustomed to doing lap intervals: keeping the strap in place. Garmin has designed the strap to be a bit thicker with a tacky back surface. The sleek, non-slip strap stays in place even after vigorous wall push-offs. No longer will your swim-specific chest strap become a belt after your first half lap. Since the proper fit of this strap is essential, Garmin has taken the usual step of including an extending strap so that it can accommodate the petite and the large-lunged alike. So it can fit chest sizes ranging from 23” to 57”. Importantly, the material has also been developed to be resistant to pool chemicals, increasing its durability and lifespan.
On the flip side, the HRM-Tri has been designed using a more traditional material for the strap itself, with the intention of keeping it comfortable enough to wear all day during a race. Since you will be using it underwater, Garmin has given the area immediately around the module the same tacky material that is used for all of the back side of the HRM-Swim. It can fit a wide range of chest sizes from 23.5” to 56.0”. But what really sets the HRM-Tri strap apart from the HRM-Swim is that it has really been designed to be worn all day throughout all your activities and will even provide you with additional Running Dynamics metrics. It will allow you to track your vertical oscillation and ground contact time. Vertical oscillation is basically how much bounce you have in your step. That’s important because too much bounce means that you are losing energy that would be better used to propel you forward. And if you are already struggling to get your marathon legs under you, there is no point in wasting all that energy in vertical bounce. Knowing how much bounce you have and following intelligent methods to reduce it will improve your efficiency and performance. Similarly, ground contact time is another measurement by which you can isolate the points of form that can be improved. The less time you spend with your foot on the ground, the sharper your cadence will get. You will also be less likely to injure yourself since running injuries happen when the foot is on the ground.
Both straps work off of ANT+ technology whereby the straps can be paired with a supported Garmin device (FR920XT, Fenix3, Epix), and then record your heart rate under water. As soon as you are out of the water, which includes when you lift your torso out of the water at the end of a lane, the strap syncs up with the watch so you can immediately see what your results are. You’ll get your real-time heart rate, interval summaries and the stored heart rate through the session. And since they do use the ANT+ technology, you can use them for other non-swimming activities.
Get the best of both worlds and unify your training with the Garmin HRM-Tri/HRM-Swim Bundle.
