The ENVE Stem is light, stiff, durable, practical. ENVE is a carbon-fiber company that makes bike parts. This stem is probably the most conventional part ENVE sells. There were plenty of ways ENVE could have gone with this, but, as with Occam's razor, they decided the smartest way to go was the simplest.
Not that simple is easy. Its just that simple has many advantages. Easier to work with, easier to care for, more flexible in use. It's light at 120g, but not scary light. And that's for a reason. They wanted it to be stiffer and more durable than stems, be they aluminum or carbon-fiber, in the same weight range. And their thinking is such that when they weighed the advantages of making a carbon-fiber face plate, they saw that it offered nothing over aluminum, so they stuck with aluminum.
As we wrote, this stem is pretty straight forward. It's a carbon-fiber body that has an aluminum face-plate secured by four bolts. The steerer is clamped by two bolts. All six bolts are titanium and they screw into alloy nuts embedded in the stem. The stem-side of the handlebar clamp comes rough for more secure clamping.
If you're looking for a carbon-fiber stem that out-does aluminum in every regard and you'll never have to worry about, the ENVE Stem is for you.
