Capo G.S. Padrone Thermal Jacket Info

The Capo G.S. Padrone Thermal Jacket is Capo's cold-weather cycling jacket for days when the temperature sits between about 30 and 50°F. It is now in its twelfth season and its third generation, which means the pattern and fabric have been refined over a long run rather than reinvented each year.

eVent DVstretch fabric

The jacket is built from eVent DVstretch, a windproof thermal fabric that blocks wind, resists moisture and is intended to regulate temperature as your effort changes. That last part matters in winter riding. A jacket that only traps heat leaves you damp after the first climb and chilled on the way down, and eVent's membrane is designed to let water vapor escape while keeping cold air out. Capo pairs it with a base layer for the bottom of that 30 to 50°F range.

Cut for the riding position

The pattern is anatomic, shaped for a rider leaning over the bars rather than standing upright. Articulated sleeves keep the fabric from bunching at the elbow, tapered cuffs close the gap at the wrist under your gloves, and the signature Padrone collar sits snug around the neck to stop cold air getting in at the top. The full-length YKK zipper has a lockable slider, so it stays put once you've set it.

Pockets and visibility

There are three standard rear pockets plus a fourth security pocket with a zipper, lockable slider and water-resistant membrane, which keeps a phone dry on a wet ride. Winter rides often start or end in low light, so Capo added reflective details down the left side and along the tops of the rear pockets, along with reflective logos front and back.

The jacket is made in Italy and comes in red or black, sizes XS through XXL. It suits riders who keep their outdoor miles going through the winter and want one dependable jacket for cold, dry days.

The RA Perspective

This is the jacket we point people to when they ask how to keep riding outside once it gets properly cold. Twelve seasons in, Capo has had a long time to sort out the details, and it shows in the fit. The articulated sleeves and tapered cuffs mean nothing bunches up when you're on the hoods for a few hours.

The eVent fabric is the reason it costs what it does. Plenty of winter jackets block wind, but the cheaper ones turn into a sauna on the first long climb. eVent is designed to let moisture out, which is what keeps you from getting chilled on the descent afterward.

A few things to know. Capo rates it down to about 30°F with a base layer, so below freezing you'll want to add a thermal base layer and a good set of gloves. It's water resistant, not waterproof, so it handles damp roads and light drizzle rather than a cold, steady rain. The fit is on the closer side of the range, which is good for keeping warm but leaves less room for heavy layers.

The reflective trim is a nice touch for December rides that end after sunset, and the red color helps there too. If you're the type who rides through the winter rather than moving indoors, this belongs near the top of your list.
