Dan Empfield founded Quintana Roo in 1987 — and built the triathlon bike category along with it. The brand’s first product was the world’s first wetsuit designed exclusively for triathlon; Empfield sewed early prototypes himself after discovering the right suit could cut seconds per hundred yards in the water. In 1989, he designed the Superform — the first bicycle purpose-built for triathlon, engineered from the aerobars back. That same year, Ray Browning rode it to a course record at Ironman New Zealand. The V-PRi later set the record for the fastest Ironman bike split ever recorded.
