The Tickr X from Wahoo Fitness is the most advanced heart rate monitor we’ve ever seen. It can work as your basic ANT+ enabled unit for pairing with a bike computer, but it does so much more.

The so much more is because the unit is packed with an accelerometer, sophisticated programming, and a memory chip. The accelerometer, when paired with the programming, is sensitive enough to detect and measure not only horizontal and vertical movement, but also strides and repetitions. It can estimate your caloric expenditure. It can count sit-ups. It can tell how long your strides are, and how efficient your running it. It can even measure cadence if you’re riding a bicycle. And you can set it up to record up to sixteen hours of runs, exercises, and rides without pairing to a computer or phone. You just put it on, make sure the red light is flashing; it is recording, and start your run.

There’s even something called Rapid Double Tap Control. If you’re running without a paired computer or phone, it functions as a kind of lap counter during your workout. When you’ve got your phone with you, and paired, it can remotely control phone apps, both fitness and other stuff.

As with the Tickr, it is constantly broadcasting both ANT+ and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless signals. The two signals make it versatile. You can ride with it and have it talk to your ANT+ enabled bike computer. You can run or workout with it and have it talk with your Bluetooth-equipped smartphone. And it can do both simultaneously, if you care to do so.

Pair it with your smartphone and you can put the signal into over 50 apps, for real-time reading as well as recording and analysis.

The Tickr can be read by several Bluetooth-equipped devices. They include the iPhone 4S and newer, iPad third-generation and newer, as well as iPad mini, and iPad air, and the fifth generation iPod Touch. Android-equipped phones first must have the Bluetooth 4.0 radio antenna, then run version 4.3 or newer and allows for third-party app access to that Bluetooth antenna.

The Tickr is technically just the broadcast unit. It measures 2.75” wide by 1.5” long by .5” thick. It has a waterproof rating of IPX7, or down to a depth of five feet. It snaps into an adjustable cloth strap that can be as narrow as 24” and adjust up to 48”. The strap can be washed (hand-wash is preferable). It runs off a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery, which is included.
