ENVE SES 4.5 Disc Wheel - Rear Info
ENVE SES 4.5 Disc Wheel - Rear is ENVE's speed-focused road wheel, built for riders who want the fastest wheelset on undulating terrain and rough pavement rather than a dedicated climbing wheel. It's one of the most popular wheels in ENVE's own lineup, the kind of wheel that shows up disproportionately often on ENVE staff bikes because it balances outright speed with the stability to hold that speed on imperfect roads. This listing is the rear wheel only, meant to pair with ENVE's 50mm-depth SES 4.5 front wheel.
The SES 4.5 traces back to 2016, when ENVE built the original SES 4.5 AR specifically for the cobbles and crosswinds of Paris-Roubaix, engineering an aero wheel around the high-volume 28-32mm tires that race demanded rather than the narrower tires aero wheels were typically built around at the time. It was the first wheel of its kind. The current SES 4.5 carries that same high-volume tire optimization and aerodynamic shaping forward, redesigned with a lighter laminate schedule and ENVE's Wide Hookless Bead pinch-flat protection to shave weight and improve ride feel without giving up the stability the original was known for.
This rear wheel runs a 56mm-deep rim, deeper than the 50mm front, following the same Smart ENVE System logic used across ENVE's lineup — different depths front and rear to account for how airflow hits each wheel differently as the bike moves through it. The rim carries a 25mm internal width and 32mm external width across 24 spokes, wide enough to fully support the high-volume tires the wheel was designed around and to keep tire and rim profile matched for aerodynamic efficiency rather than working against each other. Like the rest of the SES line, the rim uses a hookless bead built to a precise, ETRTO-compliant bead seat diameter, which is what makes the tubeless setup seal consistently and hold air the way it's supposed to.
The wheel runs ENVE's INNERDRIVE Premium straight-pull hub, engineered in-house with oversized steel ratchets positioned inboard, over the bearings, rather than pushing outward on the axle the way many hub designs do. That placement reduces stress on the axle and bearings while keeping engagement dependable under hard efforts. It ships with 12x142mm thru-axle rear spacing and a Center Lock disc mount, and the freehub body — Shimano/SRAM HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo N3W, or Microspline — gets chosen at checkout to match your drivetrain. Riders who want a different feel than the stock 40-tooth ratchet can swap in a 60, 80, or 100-tooth option for faster pickup.
ENVE lists this rear wheel's complete weight, with tape and valve installed, at 803 grams, which puts the full SES 4.5 set under 1,500 grams — light for a wheelset built around a 56mm rear rim and high-volume tire support. The wheel is optimized around a 27mm tubeless tire and rated to 80 psi at minimum tire size, and like the rest of the SES line, it's tubeless and disc brake only. Where the SES 2.3 gives up some aero performance to save weight for climbing, the SES 4.5 leans the other way, toward outright speed and stability on rough or technical pavement — the wheel to reach for when the terrain is fast, flat to rolling, and not always smooth.
