ENVE SES 2.3 Disc Wheel - Rear Info

ENVE SES 2.3 Disc Wheel - Rear is the rear half of ENVE's lightest wheelset in the Smart ENVE System lineup, built specifically for climbing and the rolling terrain between climbs rather than flat-out aero speed. ENVE designed the SES 2.3 as a purpose-built mountain wheel for the rider who wants confidence-inspiring handling on descents as much as low weight on the way up, following the same philosophy alpinists use with lightweight gear: carry less, move faster, and still trust the equipment when the terrain turns technical. This listing is the rear wheel only, meant to pair with ENVE's 28mm-depth SES 2.3 front wheel.

Like the rest of ENVE's Smart ENVE System wheels, the SES 2.3 uses dissimilar front and rear rim depths — 28mm up front, 32mm here in the rear — a design choice built around how airflow behaves differently at the front and back of a moving bike. That extra depth in the rear rim adds aerodynamic efficiency on flat and rolling terrain without compromising the crosswind stability the shallower front wheel is tuned for. ENVE builds the rim with continuously running carbon fibers and tapering laminates, removing excess material and layering fiber orientation by zone so the sections of the rim that need impact toughness or tire retention get it without adding weight to the sections that don't.

The rim uses ENVE's hookless bead design, which relies on machined tooling to hold a precise, ETRTO-compliant bead seat diameter rather than the rolled hook lip found on traditional clincher rims. That precision is what makes the tubeless interface work — consistent air retention and a tire bead that seats predictably every time. The same hookless shape doubles as flat protection: ENVE calls it Wide Hookless Bead, and the wider, blunter rim edge gives a tire more surface area to bottom out against on a hard hit, which cuts down on pinch flats compared to a narrower hooked rim. This wheel is tubeless and disc brake only, built around 25-27mm tires and rated to 90 psi at the minimum labeled tire size.

This wheel runs ENVE's INNERDRIVE Premium straight-pull hub, a design ENVE engineers in-house rather than sourcing from an outside hub manufacturer. Oversized steel ratchets sit inboard, over the bearings instead of pushing outward on the axle, which reduces stress on both the axle and the bearings while keeping engagement reliable. The hub ships with 12x142mm thru-axle rear spacing and a Center Lock disc mount, and buyers choose their freehub body — Shimano/SRAM HG, SRAM XDR, or Campagnolo N3W — at checkout. ENVE also builds in details that matter more over years of riding than on day one: an anti-twist spoke hole to keep spokes from twisting during the build or under load, a straight-pull hubshell that uses a single consistent spoke length for easier service, and enough spacing between spoke crossings to avoid the creak that shows up on some wheels after a season of hard miles. Riders can also swap the internal ratchet for a 60, 80, or 100-tooth option if they want faster engagement than the stock 40-tooth setup provides.

ENVE lists this rear wheel's complete weight, with rim tape and valve installed, at 690 grams — light for a 32mm carbon disc wheel and a big part of what lets the full SES 2.3 set land in ENVE's sub-1,200 gram target range. That weight, combined with the hookless tubeless setup and the dissimilar-depth aero profile, is why ENVE positions the SES 2.3 as a wheel for uncompromising climbers rather than an all-around wheel for every kind of riding. It sits below the more versatile SES 3.4 and the more aero-focused SES 4.5 in ENVE's lineup, and it comes with one explicit limitation worth knowing before you buy: ENVE does not recommend this wheel for off-road or gravel use, a direct result of how aggressively the rim has been lightened for pavement climbing.

The RA Perspective

We sell the SES 2.3 to a specific kind of customer: someone who already knows they want a dedicated climbing wheel and isn't looking for a do-everything set. If a customer asks us for one wheelset to cover club rides, gravel days, and the occasional race, we point them somewhere else. If they're building a bike specifically to go up mountains faster and still feel composed coming back down, this is one of the better options on the wall.

The weight is real. At a claimed 690 grams for this rear wheel with tape and valve installed, it's noticeably lighter in hand than most disc wheels at this depth, and that shows up on a sustained climb in a way that's hard to fake with marketing copy. The hookless tubeless setup has been reliable in our experience, though it does mean sticking to ENVE's tire size and pressure guidance rather than running whatever tire happened to be in stock.

The tradeoff is right there in ENVE's own warning: this rim isn't built for off-road or gravel use. It's a road wheel, full stop, and pushing it outside that use case is asking for trouble given how much material ENVE stripped out to hit this weight.

We'd recommend this to a rider who does most of their riding on pavement with real elevation change — gran fondos with serious climbing, mountain century rides, or a race calendar that rewards a lighter bike. For flatter terrain or mixed surfaces, the SES 3.4 or 4.5 is the better call.
